2010 Street Truck of the Year: DeRanged Power Stroke Ford Ranger
There are plenty of ways to make a Ranger fast. Dalpilot decided to put a 1,000+ horsepower 6.0L Power Stroke diesel in one.
The truck, named DeRanged, started life as a 2000 extended-cab Ranger that had been donated to Dalpilot. After discovering problems with the frame, he switched to a 2005 Ranger STX and began building the truck around the Power Stroke.
When Dalpilot introduced the project on The Ranger Station, he described it as a 1,000+ horsepower, 6.0-liter Power Stroke that had been bored to 6.1 liters. His forum signature summed up the rest of the plan: twin turbos, nitrous and water injection. He also made a point of emphasizing that it was a Power Stroke — not a Cummins — and that the project was all Ford.

This wasn’t going to be a stock Ranger with a diesel swap. The frame was back-halved and fitted with a four-link rear suspension, and the truck received a narrowed Ford Sterling 10.5 rear axle, drag slicks and a roll cage. Up front, the suspension was lowered, while the interior was stripped down and rebuilt around racing seats, harnesses and an aluminum dash.
The 6.0 Power Stroke received larger injectors, upgraded internal components and compound turbochargers. A built 5R110 automatic transmission handled the power, while nitrous and water/methanol injection were used to help the engine make power and get the big turbos working.
Getting everything to work together wasn’t always easy. There were electrical and transmission-control problems during the build, brake issues and plenty of normal race-truck fabrication headaches. Eventually, the engine itself became the biggest problem.
An oil filtration setup that was too restrictive contributed to oil-pressure problems and ultimately engine damage. The engine was pulled apart and rebuilt at Texas Diesel Power and DeRanged went back together.
By 2010, the truck had become one of the more unusual Rangers on The Ranger Station. It was selected as the March 2010 Street Truck of the Month and went on to be named 2010 Street Truck of the Year.
The truck continued to evolve after that. Later coverage reported more than 840 rear-wheel horsepower without nitrous, a weight of about 4,650 pounds and quarter-mile times in the nine-second range. Eventually, DeRanged was reported running a 9.36 at 153 mph.
What started as a Ranger with a Power Stroke swap had turned into a full-blown diesel drag truck — and in 2010, that made Dalpilot’s DeRanged The Ranger Station’s Street Truck of the Year.
