Whether you’re looking at a used truck, or looking at a truck in the salvage yard, it can be helpful to know what everything stands for on the federal sticker. The sticker can be found on the door latch edge of the drivers door.

There are some things on the sticker that are self explanatory such as the build date, tire size, rim size, tire pressure, and VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)

GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) – This IS NOT how much the truck weighs. This is the TOTAL amount the truck can weigh (including the driver and passenger) when fully loaded.

So if a Ford Ranger’s GVWR is 4,840 pounds, that’s the most the manufacturer and government have certified the truck to possibly weigh with fuel, passengers, and cargo. These classifications exist for safety regulation, commercial designation, and registration purposes.

GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) – GAWR is the maximum distributed weight that may be supported by an axle. If you loaded up the bed of your Ford Ranger, and parked with just your rear wheels on a truck scale, you couldn’t weigh more than what was listed next to “REAR GAWR”
