
Important Ford Ranger Towing Information
Before towing with your Ford Ranger, it’s important to understand the weight ratings and limitations (towing capacity) listed in the owner’s manual. These ratings are designed to help prevent damage to the truck and improve towing safety.
Ford states that trailer towing places additional stress on the engine, transmission, axle, brakes, tires, and suspension. Depending on the trailer and model year, towing may require a factory tow package or additional equipment.

Follow These Towing Guidelines
Ford recommends the following when towing a trailer:
- Consult your local motor vehicle laws regarding trailer towing.
- Follow the installation instructions included with towing accessories.
- Stay within your vehicle’s weight limits.
- Use extra caution while driving with a trailer.
- Do not drive faster than 55 mph when towing a trailer.
- Service your vehicle more frequently if it is used for towing.
- For high altitude operation, reduce GCW by 2% per 1,000 ft. elevation.
- Deactivate Overdrive when towing up or down steep hills or use Tow/Haul mode on 2019+ Rangers.
Understanding Ford Ranger Weight Ratings
Cargo Weight – includes all weight added to the Base Curb Weight, including cargo and optional equipment. When towing, trailer tongue load or king pin weight is also part of cargo weight.
Payload – is the combined weight of cargo and passengers that the vehicle is carrying. The maximum payload for your vehicle can be found on the Tire Label on the B-Pillar or the edge of the driver’s door of the 2005 and newer Ford Ranger. Look for “THE COMBINED WEIGHT OF OCCUPANTS AND CARGO SHOULD NEVER EXCEED XXX kg OR XXX lb.” for maximum payload. The payload listed on the Tire Label is the maximum payload for the vehicle as built by the assembly plant.
IMPORTANT: If any aftermarket or authorized-dealer installed equipment has been installed on the vehicle, the weight of the equipment must be subtracted from the payload listed on the Tire Label in order to determine the new payload.

GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) – is the maximum allowable weight of the fully loaded vehicle (including all options, equipment, passengers and cargo). The GVWR is shown on the Safety Compliance Certification Label located on the B-Pillar or the edge of the driver’s door. The GVW must never exceed the GVWR.
GCW (Gross Combined Weight) – is the weight of the loaded vehicle (GVW) plus the weight of the fully loaded trailer.
GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating) – is the maximum allowable weight of the vehicle and the loaded trailer– including all cargo and passengers– that the vehicle can handle without risking damage. (Important: The towing vehicle’s braking system is rated for operation at GVWR, not at GCWR.) Separate functional brakes should be used for safe control of towed vehicles and for trailers where the GCW of the towing vehicle plus the trailer exceed the GVWR of the towing vehicle. The GCW must never exceed the GCWR.
Maximum Loaded Trailer Weight – is the highest possible weight of a fully loaded trailer the vehicle can tow. It assumes a vehicle with only mandatory options, no cargo (internal or external), a tongue load of 10–15%, and driver only (150 lb.). Consult your authorized dealer (or the RV and Trailer Towing Guide provided by your authorized dealer) for more detailed information.
Tongue Load Weight – refers to the amount of the weight that a trailer pushes down on a trailer hitch. Examples: For a 5,000 lb. conventional trailer, multiply 5,000 by 0.10 and 0.15 to obtain a proper tongue load range of 500 to 750 lbs.
Safety Compliance Certification Label
The Safety Compliance Certification label is on the driver’s door jamb and lists the trucks Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and the front and rear Gross Axle Weight Ratings.
Tire and Loading Sticker
Beginning in 2005, Ford added a “Tire and Loading Information” label to the driver’s door jamb that clearly lists a truck’s maximum combined weight of occupants and cargo. For 2004 and older Rangers, however, that number isn’t spelled out so conveniently. Owners are left to interpret GVWR and axle ratings on their own — or guess.

Hitches
Hitch Selection – For towing trailers up to 2,000 lbs., use a weight carrying hitch and ball which uniformly distributes the trailer tongue loads through the underbody structure. Use a frame-mounted weight distributing hitch for trailers over 2,000 lbs.
Step Bumper – The optional step bumper is equipped with an integral hitch and requires only a ball with a 3⁄4 in. (19 mm) shank diameter. The bumper has a
2,000 lb. trailer weight and 200 lb. tongue weight capability.
Safety Chains – Always connect the trailer’s safety chains to the vehicle. To connect the trailer’s safety chains, cross the chains under the trailer tongue and allow slack for turning corners. If you use a rental trailer, follow the instructions that the rental agency gives to you.
Trailer Brakes – Electric brakes and manual, automatic or surge-type brakes are safe if installed properly and adjusted to the manufacturer’s specifications. The trailer brakes must meet local and Federal regulations. The braking system of the tow vehicle is rated for operation at the GVWR not GCWR. In other words, your brakes are designed to stop a properly loaded Ford Ranger, not the trailer. The trailer should have its own brakes.
WARNING: Do not tow a trailer fitted with electric trailer brakes unless your vehicle is fitted with a compatible aftermarket electronic trailer brake controller. Failure to follow this instruction could result in the loss of control of your vehicle, personal injury or death.
Trailer Lamps – Trailer lamps are required on most towed vehicles. Make sure your trailer lamps conform to local and Federal regulations. See your dealer or
trailer rental agency for proper instructions and equipment for hooking up trailer lamps. Please don’t be the guy that thinks he can tow a trailer without brake lights or taillights because you’re not going very far.

Special Notes
3.0L Powered Rangers – When towing on roads with steep grades or moderate but long sustained grades (5-miles or more), or when ambient temperatures exceed 100°F, vehicle speed should not exceed 45 mph in both cases.
Splash Models – Optional payload is not available on 4×2 Splash or Special Suspension, therefore maximum trailer weight is 2,000 lbs.

Ford’s 1991 Ranger sales brochure did not list trailer towing capacities. I could not locate a copy of the 1991 Ford Ranger owner’s manual or the 1991 Ford towing guide. Until I do, I would suggest looking at the 1990 and 1992 trailer weight limits. I think you will find similar ratings between those years to estimate what the limits would be for 1991.
