got an 86 bronco 2 thats getting an 8.8 soon. but the 8.8 came out of a 96 explorer, and the flange is bigger than my 7.5.

my thoughts, grab the end of the 96 explorer drive shaft, and get the conversion u joint from the 7.5 to 8.8 u joint. use my 7.5 shaft with the 8.8 cap. and call it a day

1310 to a 1330 spicer 5-134x?

sound like a good plan? are my sizes correct?

look for a gen3 93_97 ranger with the 7.5
should be the flange you need and ford motorsports sells the conversion u-joint you need if you want to go the route ,

will do. heading to the shop today, if the donor explorer is there, i'll check out what flange it has. hopefully it will save me a trip to the junkyard

Just swap the pinion flange.

Any good auto parts store should have conversion joints for $12-15, just make sure of the sizes. My Ranchero actually came stock with the 1310-1330 joint at one end.

well i'll either need the rear flange of a 8.8 driveshaft, and a converion U joint.

or i need a 7.5 pinion flange and use my regular driveshaft on my 86.

i'll post up when i figure out a solution

ford changed the pinion flange spacing in 91 or 92 to form 2.5 bolt circle(83-90/91) to 3" bolt circle on 90/91to current for 7.5/8.8 so all explorers have the 3.0 so worse case you can use your stock driveshaft and drill/tap the 4 holes for the 2.5 into the explorer flange and have a dual bolt pattern on you 8.8.

the drive shaft will center itself on the pinion flange

just dealt with this on my v8 conversion adapted a fs bronco driveshaft to an 89 7.5(2.5 bolt circle) so ive done plenty of research on it

why drill and tap? wouldn't swapping the pinions be easier?

but good info, thats about the years i expected, considering my 8.8 is a 94, and my DS is a 86

Be aware swapping the pinion flange will disturb the preload on your pinion bearings. Be sure to reestablish the correct preload when you put it back together otherwise things will go downhill real quick on that rearend (drilling the flange might actually be easier).
