My 2Wd 2003 Ranger has a growl in its rear differential. Not the wheel bearings. Is it a hemorrhoid to fix?

If it's not the wheel bearings than there's really only 3 other options.. all of which are a hemorrhoid.

Pop the cover off and put some eyes on things.

That's what I thought! Thanks for the reply. Maybe Preparation H in the gear oil and a squirt or two in my beer?

Mabey just a squirt or two of beer In the preparation H lol.

If the thing IS toast.. probably be cheapest to just source an entire used axle and spend a quick afternoon swapping it out. Being 2wd makes it easier.. don't need to worry about matching gear ratios front/back.

I second that, swapping the rear axle is pretty simple, 4 bolts for the driveline, 4 U bolts, two shock bolts, parking brake cable and one soft brake line

any play at the pinion ? up/down, sideways?
