hi, when i built the 2.8 that is in my 78 Pinto I left the same flat top pistons in the block. what i did though was get a custom 5000 rpm grind on my cam from these guys,

www.coltcams.com you can check out the profiles on the site. you send him your stick and the lifters, he will grind them for you. if you go this route get zinc added oil when you break in the shaft.

next i cleaned up the heads, valves and drilled out the blocked water passage. then I also found a copy of preutte's book about the ford V6 and read up on how to make floating rocker guides. replaced the timing gears, built the engine back up and she is a very strong runner today.

not sure what is available aftermarket for the 2.8. hope this helps and if need be i can link you to my car build... cheers

but then again you can also ask this question down in the engine section too.

LONG before I'd performance build (or even rebuild) a 2.8 I'd swap to a 2.9

And WAY before I'd swap a 2.9 into anything I'd swap in a 4.0

and well before I'd do that (again) I'd think very seriously about a 5.0 swap.

And I think I'd go shopping for an F-150 with a 5.0 before doing that much work....

And the basis for these decisions is entirely about "Bang for the buck"

One swap I was working on (in the part collection phase) was a swap to put
a 6.8l V10 into a 1995 F-150 using a wiring harness from a 1997 F350.

I gave up on that when the guy who was selling the 6.8 engine sold it to
someone else (He did return my deposit)

lol.... some like to keep it original.... and the pinto with a 2.8 is fun and simple.
