My truck has a 2.3 5-speed with 100,000 on it. Tranny making a little noise but is all that HP too much for the 7.5 in it? The truck clunks when driving (letting up on the gas). The u-joints are fine so I think it is the rear. with the truck parked and in 1st gear I can push the truck 6 to 10 inches and it makes the clunk noise when it rolls back. What do you think? Am I right about the rear. Thanks

i dont understand what you are trying to say??? i would like to think that 100hp wouldn't shell a 7.5 rear end. maybe its just its time. does the truck jump or ride unusual? might be your rear drums or parking break.

Truck runs and drives fine. Just making a nasty noise every time I take my foot off the gas.

Sounds like the gears are worn and the rear will soon give up on you. Jack the truck up and grab 1 wheel and turn it. Have the trans engaged/in gear and if its a Traction lock diff. You will need both wheels off the ground when you turn the wheel with some force forward and back, if you get a lot of movement front to back, you have a diff problem.

Or, there could be excess backlash in the gears because the crush washer has somehow gotten crushed even more than originally set, another suspected item would be the pinion bearings are wearing out.

What size tires you running? A 7.5 has lived behind a mild V-8 with no problem, driven correctly.

Those still aren't huge. the 7.5 should be able to handle them. It may just be time for a rear end re-build. They do wear out eventually, some faster than others.

I've got 154,000 on my '94 2.3 5-speed 4x4. Oh wait. The 4x4 Rangers have an 8.8 right?

Well... it's probably not KILLING your rear end if that even is the problem. My 7.5 stood up behind my 2.9 with 33's on it, so it's probably just wearing out, or the crush washer got crushed even more as has been said. Mostly just an age thing I imagine.

it wont matter if its 4x4 or not you just need to check the tag on the rear diff. it'll tell you what rear you have.

The only thing for certain is that all 4.0L came with the 8.8. Others, even some 4x2's came with the 8.8.
