TSB 19-2052 Engine Cold Start Runs Rough, Excessive Fast Idle And Or Rough Shifting Transmission

Summary:

Some 2019 Ford Ranger vehicles built on or before 11-Feb-2019 may exhibit a runs rough, excessive fast idle and/or a rough shifting transmission condition when the engine is cold. This may be due to the powertrain control module (PCM) software parameters including cold start and warm-up drivability, idle speed control, and fuel injection delivery strategies. To resolve the condition, update the PCM software.

Action:

Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition if the vehicle meets all of the following criteria:

  • 2019 Ford Ranger
  • Built on or before 11-Feb-2019

Warranty Status:

Eligible under provisions of New Vehicle Limited Warranty (NVLW)/Emissions Warranty/Service Part Warranty (SPW)/Special Service Part (SSP)/Extended Service Plan (ESP) coverage. Limits/policies/prior approvals are not altered by a TSB. NVLW/Emissions Warranty/SPW/SSP/ESP coverage limits are determined by the identified causal part and verified using the OASIS part coverage tool.

Service Procedure:

1. Is the customer complaint the vehicle exhibits a rough/fast idle and/or rough transmission shifting at first startup?

(1). Yes – proceed to Step 2.

(2). No – this article does not apply. Refer to the Powertrain Control/Emission Diagnosis (PC/ED) Manual for further diagnostics.

2. Reprogram the PCM using the latest software level of the appropriate Ford diagnostic scan tool.

NOTE: ADVISE THE CUSTOMER THAT THIS VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH AN ADAPTIVE TRANSMISSION SHIFT STRATEGY WHICH ALLOWS THE VEHICLE’S COMPUTER TO LEARN THE TRANSMISSION’S UNIQUE PARAMETERS AND IMPROVE SHIFT QUALITY. WHEN THE ADAPTIVE STRATEGY IS RESET, THE COMPUTER WILL BEGIN A RELEARNING PROCESS. THIS RELEARNING PROCESS MAY RESULT IN FIRMER THAN NORMAL UPSHIFTS AND DOWNSHIFTS FOR SEVERAL DAYS.
