What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

Put in new hood bumpers and plug wires on the ‘07 2.3 w/ 170k. Discovered oil in the plug wells. Could be CHT sensor leaking or more likely valve cover gaskets. Ordered the 19mm deep well socket for the CHT sensor.

The last time I had that, it was the donuts for the sparkplug tubes. OEM or Felpro were the only ones I could trust.

It was a Honda CR-V. On their engines, the spark plug tubes have their own gaskets because the spark plugs come in through the valve cover between the dual over head cams. The 2.3 Ecoboost is a similar setup.

In any case, it sounds like you have a valve cover seal problem, even if you have your spark plugs on the side of the head instead of on top.

Oh. On this duratech, the valve cover is on top surrounding the vertical spark plug wells, so it almost has to be the valve cover gasket(s).

Replaced an exhaust pipe gasket. New spark plug wires. Gapped the plugs to spec. Got a nice smooth idle now!

I finished installing my torque monster headers and built my exhaust system, the truck sounds awesome.
I've been chasing a weird issue where my turn signals hyper flash when I'm stepping on the brakes, I finally found the issue and it was a couple of wires above the spare tire carrier that had been chewed up by packrats. I soldered in new wires and fixed that problem. I can't begin to describe how much I hate packrats!

Oh, I answered the front door in a T-shirt and boxers when the FedEx guy delivered the new fog light valance for the 97. I’ll never get used to Sunday deliveries. Haven’t opened the box yet.

Between Friday and Saturday the Choptop got all new fuel lines. Pressure line is all -6 AN stainless braided PTFE line, return has the same on the ends and 3/8 aluminum tube for the long run. Vent line has rubber high-pressure fuel line on the ends and 1/4” NiCopp line for the long run. Was actually able to snap it in the factory clips. There was like 6 leaks in the original lines…

Today I shop vacuumed most of the interior of the Choptop and started daydreaming about how I’m going to rebuild the transmission crossmember.

One of you mentioned this fix for opening the plenum, so my neighbor used his leaf blower in the vents in my Ranger. The AC would blow hot upon startup after the track sat and then would gradually blow cool air. The leaf blower seems to have helped.

The neighbor, at my direction to avoid damage, used the blower in each of the 4 vents for about 5 seconds. He also did not hold the blower outlet hard against the vent opening. I didn't want to risk damage.

If it helps any this is what I did, of course the radius arm pivots aren't necessary and would definitely make it simpler without incorporating those into the setup...

Today I used the '97 to tow the new to me tractor over to the shop driveway, that's as far as I got on tractor repair though... I did crank it and it smoked for a couple puffs but I think I'm going to have to take the injector pump apart...

Cleaned the interior a bit. I'm going to do a deep clean this upcoming weekend.
