Saginaw really that simple??

Josh...thats pretty funny. My pump died on Hells Revenge also. Fortunately, after Hell's Gate!

When I did my saginaw pump on my '95 4.0 I had to buy a high pressure hose for and older truck. The fitting that goes into the pump was different. I think they changed hose styles in '95 when they went ODB II.

Heres a comparison of the two styles. Saginaw hose is the shiny one.

Mine looks like the one on the right.....

It looks like the one one the right and it worked on the Saginaw? I tried it at first and it leaked like there was a 1 inch hole in the hose.lol Thats when I noticed the pump fitting was a lot deeper and didnt have a tapered seat fort he tip of the line.

I just picked up the metal res. pump with the horseshoe bracket from O'Rileys. A1Cardone 20-6244 for $79 and a $45 core. There were 4 of them in local stores!
Modded the bracket and installed the pulley...once I get the cooler tomorrow, I will hook it up and try it out!

My stock one died at Moab!

Wow, they're not even on the O'Reilly system online. You're sure you got the 6244?

I'm pretty sure....:dunno:

I am going to have to install a power steering cooler very soon, so when i tear it apart, i will let you know for sure.

Just pick up some 3/8 tranny cooler line and cut the return line about 3" from the steering box, clamp the line on there run it trough the cooler, then clamp the other end on the reservoir barb. You dont have to take anything apart really.

oh, ok. Doesn't sound too hard. Which one is the return line? lol.

just to throw out to anyone reading this. You are insane if you run your steering without a cooler, ford C2 pump, saginaw or whatever may be. Your steering fluid gets very hot, especially offroad and will break parts down very fast. That is the main cause of death especially to the C2's.... and the saginaw's are NOT exempt from this either.

if you are confused on how to install a cooler... you can use any style cooler, bigger is better. the return line (low pressure) feeds into one of the ports on the cooler, and then the other port on the cooler feeds into your box.

Yup... I went in and ordered it by part number, not application. I should have the new cooler on tomorrow and will try it out. The pump is already installed and ready to go.

As for the PS cooler...its really a must have, especially with a front locker! Mine has been giving me trouble for quite a while. It would work great in the morning and start to fade during the day. At Moab, I boiled the fluid on the slick rock trails. Power steering fluid boils at 425 degrees! :icon_surprised: Im really going to have to keep an eye on this new pump and cooler and make sure it runs cooler than before.

I didn't boil the new one, just the old. I boiled the old one not once, but twice.

So is a cooler still recommended on an unmodified truck?

.

prolly wouldn't hurt...
