Saginaw really that simple??

look in the tech library, there is a write up with pics and applications.

Must have the horseshoe bracket or wont work.

Compared to O'Riely's website, the tech library only has a small application list; none of which are at my junkyard at the moment. Was wondering if anyone had gotten a pump off of something other than the following

FORD BRONCO (1978 - 1988)
FORD F-100 (1978 - 1979)
FORD F-100 SUPER CAB (1978 - 1979)
FORD F-150 (1978 - 1979)
FORD F-150 SUPER CAB (1978 - 1979)
FORD F-250 (1978 - 1979)
FORD F-250 SUPER CAB (1978 - 1979)
FORD F-350 (1978 - 1979)
FORD F-350 SUPER CAB (1978 - 1979)

Again, I am going to buy a new pump from O'Rielly's and just need the junkyard pump to pull the reservoir off of. So if there is different pump that uses the same reservoir, that would work too.

So has anyone had gotten a pump off of something other than the above list or what have you done for a reservoir?

Here is what O'Rielly's site show just for Ford. They list other car brands as well. Just wondering if anyone has experience getting apump out of something other than the list in the tech library. Sorry about the long list

That list would be correct. I've heard of the t-bird pumps working also.

I was always under the impression the saginaw pumps were an aftermarket replacement to the ford style pumps. Everywhere I've ever seen them listed it clearly says hd replacement pump or something along those lines. If that is true then it would be tough to find one in the junkyard based on the list of vehicles.

No. I saw several when I was at the jy. I am going back to get every one that they have. I didn't know they were that hard for everyone to get.

So I am still trying to figure out what makes a pump a Saginaw pump. If I search O'Reilly's for a pump for a '79 F350, it brings up a few pumps. Some with resivour, some without

Cardone - Power Steering Pump
Part Number: 20-840
Line: A1
Remanufactured
UPC: 82617021548
Remanufactured
Without Reservoir
Saginaw Pump

Here is what I almost picked up at the junkyard today but they do not allow returns so I did not want to get it and it be wrong. It was off a 78 or 79 Olds Delta 98

A1207878.jpg

This pic is from AutoPartsWarehouse for a 79 F350 (doesnt say anything about being "Saginaw") but look like the one at the junkyard from the Delta 98

I just want an end product of a pump that does not have the standard whine. If I get the above pump without a resivour, how does a resivour mount up? Just bolts on? Sorry but I and in kinda in the dark and don't want to buy the wrong stuff when I go back to the junkyard

That is a saginaw but not the right one. The one described has the horseshoe adapter and a longer shaft for the pulley. Can't just grab any pump and throw it on or it wouldn't be such a hassle.

Ok, maybe I am not being clear. I am buying the actual pump new from either Napa or OReilly's, part numbers previously noted in this thread. Neither have the horseshoe design like the complete pump pictured in the tech section.

OReilly's Pump for $37
Part Number: 20-840

Other than the resivoir, looks the same as this

My headache and confusion is with the resivour. I am completly in the dark with what I can salvage a resivour off of. That pic of the complete pump was an example of what I found in the junkyard today and was wondering if I could use that resivour with the new pump bought at Napa or OReilly's

It will not bolt up unless you have the horseshoe bracket. Period. End of story. Unless you get the metal resevoir pump that is listed in the tech article you are doing nothing. Saginaw pumps are on nearly every GM vehicle so they aren't hard to get. Getting the RIGHT one is what makes the swap difficult. Go to the JY and find the right pump off the list you provided. Then you buy the new pump to replace the 30 year old pump that's in there. All you keep from the JY is the metal resevoir and the horseshoe bracket.

If that isn't plain enough for you, please skip this mod and move to something else.

Otherwise I will sell you the correct pump already set up so you just have to mod the bracket and bolt it on.

So the horseshoe bracket is a seperate piece? I thought it was cast in as part of the pump. So that $37 OReilly's pump is the correct pump with correct shaft length but without the resevour and horseshoe backet (which I need to pull off the jy pump). Guess that's where part of my confusion came in

So my last question to anyone is if the teardrop style resivour (different than the one pictured in the tech section) will fit (both on the OReilly's pump and assembled and mounted on truck). It is the only style resevour I saw in the JY

Sorry for all the questions. If my JY allowed returns like they used to, I would buy a bunch of parts and play around but don't want to end up with a bunch of parts and an end cost of a pump that is more than it should be

This is exactly what you need to do the swap, nothing else.

Right. I understand that. And where do I find that? If someone knows of a secret place that sells that exact pump complete as shown let me know. All my google search turned up was Napa and they can't get it

Went back to the junkyard today I looked in every Ford GM and Dodge they had and they were all the ones with the teardrop resivoir and no horseshoe bracket. If they are common in older cars, why did not one of the cars in the yard have one? Just bad luck?

I am far from retarded but every once in a while I overthink something and miss someting starring me right in the face.

Where I am now is, by some miracle, finding a complete pump as pictured above new, or getting the $37 pump from OReilly's with no clue where to get the resivour and horseshoe bracket to finish the project. Anyone let me know if you can help.

Like I said before, these pumps were (to my understanding) aftermarket for ford vehicles so looking in the junkyard is going to be hard. I bought mine a year ago for like 50-60 bucks complete from advance. Then recently it died and I couldn't source a new one anywhere so I chose to get the AGR (really not happy with it in the week it's been installed). Since this thread came up I found I can still get the pump, luckily I saved my old one so I can piece together a new one with the parts.

I wish I could tell you where to get the parts but I looked for myself and wasn't able to find anything. Sorry this doesn't help but I guess keep looking in junkyards or online.

Thanks. That is actually pretty helpful. Good to know I'm prob wasting my time in the junkyard. Guess I'll look online to try and find one new or one I could rebuild. If someone has one they want to get rid of let me know. I'll put a WTB in the classified.
