'95 Supercab Rehab - Dumb Questions Thread

Most recent, comprehensive other thread about the problem, for reference. On the leads there, Redmond closed up, and I don't know anyone insane enough to pay Morana $900 when the going rate for an entire engine here is $650.

We'll find out tomorrow if filling it with weld and refinishing the bottom is good enough.

No dice. Looks like it leaks substantially less, but still enough to smoke. Figure it's just gonna bend wherever the new weak link is between weld and old tin, and not give me enough clamping force.
Not sure what consumption is, but you can smell the smoke in the cab when you're not moving, and 90% of this truck's purpose is to tow my boat in the summer, which is basically guaranteed bumper-to-bumper traffic.

I guess I can try to cut a spreader ring that hooks all the way around that corner to the next 2 bolt holes, or rebuild the entire flange like rhekman did. I have zero experience on the plasma cutter, though.

Do 2.8/2.9 covers fit the 4.0? Modifications needed? Apparently UK ebay is lousy with them, they just don't come up right away because they call valve covers "rocker covers". Lot of 'em look rusted to shit as well, though.

Without seeing it in person it would be hard to make a recommendation, you could probably put it on a flat surface and bend things so the bolts are above the surface and the middles are the low points and get somewhere...

If I get to salvage yards at some point I can keep an eye out for passenger valve covers... If I remember right they're kinda a pain with the coil pack in the way...

Well, feck

Since junkyards no longer exist here, and apparently you can't buy these anywhere? (even ebay only seems to have passenger's right now) this is less than optimal.

After thought, but it looks like the place where it seals against the head is nice and smooth. Would it be possible, after cleaning, to build it up the top side with JB weld, sand that flat and fabricate long skinny washer so you don’t crack the JB weld when you snug it down?

I’ve never done it, but once in a blue moon, I do something a little “shade tree”……

I'm honestly not sure exactly where it's still leaking from. I only saw a little bubble right below the bolt, so I yanked the bolt and reset it in rtv. It's gonna take another drive to burn off all the residual oil that was already on the exhaust, so I can get a better idea.

If anyone does come across one and wants to part with it, this is the driver's cover, not passenger. Not sure if you can spin a pass cover around and use it on the other side if you can fab the oil fill into a pcv instead.
