2006 FX4 Daily / Offroad Build

There are definitely a few options when it comes to the wiring and I would say it honestly depends on how far or what features you want to have added to the Ranger. Unfortunately for myself I want to have all the options which means more work for myself. 🤣 By this I mean the Explorer came with a range of options when it came to their seats. The driver and passenger in most cases were power but it there was an option for manual and power lumber, heated seats and memory (driver only). I was lucky enough to have sets from Limited Explorers that had all the options for both driver and passenger.

To start the power option on the driver Mustang seat isn't worth trying to splice and make work. So I removed that wiring harness completely and threw it away. Included in that was part of the power lumber the driver Mustang seat. You don't need that wiring as I mentioned the Explorer had it as well so it already wired and they are same connectors. so is plug and play on the wiring side. The passenger seat I am still working on adding the power lumber because I have take the seat fully apart but since it was an option for the driver seat I know I can get it to work.

The next step was to get the metal center support installed. Because it fits exactly the same as the Explorer I used JB Weld and got it in place and let it cure. I would honestly want it welded but I don't have that as an option. JB Weld will though work fine cause it only needs to hold the wires and metal center support fits snug. You could honestly do this part and zip tie and the wiring from the Explorer to the Mustang seats but I couldn't let myself do that when a factory look was a possibility.

After I got the wiring in place I had to make a hole in the leather for the power adjust buttons to go through. On the last picture in the previous post you can see it to the left. I thought I was going to have to drill a hole but some how again the Mustang frame was a perfect match and there was a hole already there to pass the buttons through. After this connect all the connectors to the right one (the heated seats won't be connected because they need to have the seats apart) and wire the seats to 12V power source or per the standard Explorer seat swap directions and you will have full power Mustang seats in a Ranger!

Still need to show how the seat belts worked out and then also show the intend to get the trim from the Explorer seat to Mustang seats, but for now here are pictures of them installed

Passenger side still needs to have the hole cut in the leather for the all the switches and the seat belt installed but on the driver you can see the seat belt installed. As well as the working power lumber

Realized I didn't really take pictures of the seatbelt install but I will on the passenger and post them later on but I will still go over the install

On the Explorer and Mustang the seat belt receiver or part the buckle goes into (not sure the actual name of it) is on the tracks. For the Ranger the seat belt receiver is on the seat and I wanted to try to keep the Ranger one because it has the tensioner in case of an accident but also it will plug in like normal and remove the airbag light on the dash.

The first step is to modify the Explorer track and cut off the two attachment points and slider for its seat belt receiver, next was getting the receiver attached to the Mustang seat.

My initial thought was to use the bolt that connects the back of the seat to bottom but the stud was to big diameter wise and the tensioner was showing and not in a good placement.

So I took apart the bottom of the seats, partially removed the leather and foam to access the metal frame of the seat to find a place for me to figure out have to mount the receiver. To my surprise though a hole was already in basically the perfect spot. The only thing needed to be modified was the Ranger receiver has a small notch extension in its bracket to help with alignment. So I laid out how I wanted receiver to be and marked out the extension. The extension is curved so to get that curve I drilled out three holes (both ends and middle) then finished the cut with a Dremel. The last step was if I wanted the receiver under the leather or over it. I ended up deciding to go under for a cleaner look. This required a small cut in the leather to let the receiver pass through. After this was done just a bolt and nut was need and the receiver was attached and moving with the seat just like factory on the Ranger!
