I have recently acquired a 08-10 superduty steering gearbox in usable condition. I've read conflicting information on whether it would help with steering effort, as the factory box doesn't seem to provide the reduction in effort I'd like. It seems that the 11+ box is kind of the way to go but requires some extensive frame modification to work on a ranger, which ideally, I'd like to avoid.

I guess what I'm asking is, would this be worth swapping in? And is there a way to get this to work with the factory linkage? Currently running a 33 inch tire and a drop pitman arm on a D35, with a low mile 4x2 ranger factory steering gear and a Cardone saginaw pump. I would also like to avoid using an assist ram if I can get at least some of the way to that level of assist without one. Lines aren't an issue, I'll run adaptors to AN and get a hydraulic hose made locally if necessary.

I’m following along with this… lol

not really a huge difference with big tires...definitely better with 33s.

the sd and e series boxes are pretty good.

seen them in full size and buggy applications but not alot in rangers. more modded e than sd. i use the gm 2wd and e and over rail early ford....but the early fords are getting pricey....and stupid doodies are like rabbits....might be something worth looking at when i rework my rig.

give it a whirl

More research has led me to believe they offer more assist than the earlier boxes and are more robust in every way. Now to figure out all the bits and pieces to make it all work. I'll update this as I work through the hurdles.

Looking at the box I have tells me I have the late 08 box which has the weird triangular input shaft, vs the 36 spline shaft which is identical to the Ranger shaft. Not sure if i can find a shaft and change it, parts are kind of limited.

they are swappable to a point

get the stoopid duty shaft or the 07 spline input

Would anyone happen to know where I can find an input shaft? I've been searching for one but apparently in all the wrong places

Guy on Irate did it with a 93. Frames a hair different right? 83-92 is channel frame versus the boxed front section 93+? I'd have to go look at my 91. Either way, lot of good tech. I would start out with the right box rather than swap inputs around personally.

That section on a first gen is functionally identical. It goes to c channel for the bumper though. I think i will go to the 2011 box, I was just going on the "well, I have this" train. Seems like, for the effort i might as well go with something better still, for minimal additional effort.

Couldn't remember off the top of my head.

Keep in mind he had to chop the frame apart to run the 2011 box. You might be better served finding a 05-07 box.

ETA: you're concerned about more assist with a Saginaw pump and 33s? I have a E250 accessory bracket and junkyard saginaw, original 1991 Ranger 4x4 steering box with 200k miles, and I steer 39s with 1 finger?

I can step on the brake on a high traction surface and the wheel might as well be locked, its a heavy 2 hand operation. Off road it's about the same, depending on the situation. I have the Cardone saginaw upgrade pump and it made little difference over the original ford pump as well. A portion of this may be a me problem, as I've had hand and wrist nerve issues for much of my adult life as well.

That doesn't sound right at all. Are the lines backwards on the pump? LOL.

Seriously I have no idea how that's possible with any power at all.

they are not, reservoir is mounted to pump and I'm not that talented. The thought has crossed my mind to check the pump output pressure because it may have just been set low at the factory. Research tells me that I should be able to set the pressure at around 1550 without harming anything and would likely make a big difference, as the stock ranger pump pressure is 1100 if memory serves me correctly.
