I have a 99 ranger stepside that I just got recently and I want to swap a fast but still fairly fuel efficient engine. Does anyone know if a 300ZX engine or any other powerful 4-6cyl engine will fit? Like Honda, Subaru, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, toyota etc....

A turbo 2.3L will be your best bet.

Those engines would work, but..

A- Youre going to be walking in totally unmapped terratory.
B- While the "lets rev to 7000RPM to make 100ftlbs" mentality of your general jap engine isnt gonna cut it in a truck. Whats fast is a 300Z will more then likely, not be fast in a Ranger.
C- Transmission/Wireing/Other BS is going to give you a massive headache.
D- Why not just go with a 302?

The engine you are looking at are fast not just because of power, but because they are in light cars. Rangers are heavy.

Like Rusty said, what is fast in a 300Z is not necessarily going to be fast in a Ranger.

Ecoboost 3.5 swap. This is the correct answer.

Technically you can swap in whatever engine you want, provided you have enough money, time, and fabrication skills.
Plus, the VG30dett in the Z32 is quite large and not exactly fuel efficient.
The 2.3 Turbo would be pretty sweet, and relatively cost effective in comparison.
