I'm sorry, I know it's here somewhere but I can't find it.

I have a 94 sport extended cab, 2wd, 3.0, Auto

What year computers can I interchange with my current unit?

Thanks in advance.

94 for sure :) you might get a 93 to work, slim possibility on a 92. 95 and up no way, those are a completely different system (OBD2)

So what specific years used the OBD1 wiring system?

I think what you want is EEC IV.... I think @RonD could give you a better year range, but i believe that was 89 to 94. but connectors and wiring pinouts can change from year to year, so if all possible grab a computer from a 94, then 93 would be your next best bet but not 100 percent sure bet

Thanks, maybe Ron will chime in.

If I order one it will be the exact year and features....but I have a friend who is putting a V8 in his ranger.

1993/4 will be best match, they both used 3 digit trouble codes, 1991/2 "might work" if its FREE to try
Needs to from/for 3.0l with automatic, no other size or trans type will work

1989-1992 was last of Gen1 Rangers
1993/4 were first of Gen2 and last of the OBD1
1995 and up used OBD2

Thank you for the information. I bought my Ranger used so don't know it's full history. Is there a way to tell what year an engine is. Just in case it has been replaced.

EEC-IV is much less picky than OBD2. Really you should be able to make that thing run, and run fairly well, on any automatic trans PCM for a 3.0, or a 2.9, from 90 to 94.

No. Stop using the Wikipedia generations, they are wrong.

83-88 was gen 1, 89-92 was gen 2, 93 to 97 was gen 3, 98+ just wasn't really worth having.

I though 1989-1992 was gen1, but AKA 1.5 :)

And are they freeze plugs or core plugs?
Starter solenoid or starter relay?

I still can't figure out why a major change like from a 60wire computer to a 104wire computer didn't effect generations

But major structural changes to the front of the frame and the FESM support structures don't constitute a generation change?

My credo
Toonces drives a Ranger . . . . just not very well.
And don't forget the completely different interior and instrument panel starting in '89.

Crossed threads are tight threads.
I miss windows 7. Those were good computer years.
