Trying to follow the logic of this thread back to the beginning is like seeing into the mind of a pyschopath....

Cheap car parts to slavery -
Slavery to minimum wage -
Minimum wage to cost of living -
Cost of living to california sucks -
California sucks to emissions laws -
Emissions laws to guns -
Guns to sex jokes -
And somehow back to california sucks -

I can legally replace my own catalytic converter, you can't do that in California...
Sure you can. What you can't do is select any available catalytic converter and install it. It has to be application specific. However, I've never heard of anyone crawling under a car to inspect the number on the catalytic converter during an inspection. My guess is as long as it is reasonably close to the exhaust flow rate for that engine and it is doing its job, nobody would know the difference. But the same thing pretty much applies across the rest of the country. Installing the wrong catalytic converter is considered tampering and is illegal under Federal laws.

It was my understanding that if they see the cat is new they ask for a reciept from the shop that installed it... there's a bunch of goofy youtube videos about people putting acid on brand new cats to make them rust up and discolor quick and look old so they can pass CA emissions.

80s vehicles have very simple emissions components. Clogged EGR valves were common, as were missing and misrouted vacuum lines.

And no, they aren't harmless. If it were harmless we wouldn't have emissions laws, which extend to the Federal level. It's just as illegal to remove or modify emissions components in the rest of the country as it is in California.
Hardly, nobody knew what they were doing. They were basically throwing crap at the wall to see what would stick. Weak 2bbl? CFI? 4bbl? MFI? computer controlled 2bbl? Pick your pathway to less than 200hp and enjoy seeking obsolete parts for your toy. Makes something pre emissions look pretty good... and since it is emissions legal crushing your 80's rig and dragging a 70's one out of a fencerow is better for the environment too... I guess. It must be because the law says so.

And my mostly harmless activities I am referring to are generally not vehicle related.

There are a lot of other hobbies while mostly harmless and perfectly legal in other parts of the country are downright felonies in CA.

You mean like trying to buy ammo on your way to the range, or having it shipped right to your house?

That's where you're wrong bud. Only your state doesn't allow vehicle owners to install universal catalytic converters.. They're labeled as 49 state legal for a reason.

I'd also be willing to bet you've never seen a lifted truck take a turn and flip over. Let alone actually seeing the drivers face as it happened. That's complete horseshit.

Not totally, I have seen lifted trucks that have rolled over. Higher center of gravity for the same width makes things more likely to tip.

If it is any consolation I have to get a $15/year pistol permit when I want to get a stripped lower to build.

But being on the street at the exact same time as they are, at the exact same location where they take a turn, at the exact same time they flip over, AND seeing their face as it happens? Come on man.. It's not like this sort of thing happens every minute in America at every street corner. I'm still calling bullshit.

Yeah, I had to go back and find that. I have never seen anything actually roll.

I did have my Ranger on two wheels once. Stock height on 235/75-15's, stupid high school kid goofing around. I am sure my face looked panicked but I turned out of it and that is when I felt two bumps as the tires (right side) came back down. Not too bad for a half dead (or is that half alive) 2.8. :icon_twisted:

The Ranger's TTB is extremely prone to suspension "jacking" - there used to be a great video showing it happen in slow motion to a BII.

In the 18.5 years I have had the truck I have only done it the one time and that is with doubling the hp 8 years ago and adding a lift kit. I learned pretty quick not to do that.

Suspension is still stock with a 1" front sway bar.

I reiterate... If I can't get online and have two coal black Tanzanian hookers and a kilo of cocaine shipped to my door in the same day, I don't want to live wherever that is illegal.
