I have a '02 XLT 4x4 with 230K miles, this summer it has developed a timing chain rattle (chatter), and I want to nip it in the bud. This is my first 4L SOHC vehicle. My last ford was an '85 F150 with a 300 6 and 310k miles on it when it died, but that's another story...

I have a few questions before I get started.

Do I need to replace the sprockets, or just get the chains and tensioner kit?

And which kit(s) are best? I don't mind paying extra for quality.

And, is the "Cam service kit" (https://www.amazon.com/OTC-6488-Ford-SOHC-Service/dp/B000F5ED12) necessary?? I'd hate to spend that much for a tool I might only use once if it's not necessary.

Of course I'll also put in a new oil pump, seals and gaskets, etc., and check the bearings. it dosen't use any oil or smoke so I don't plan on pulling the heads.

Is there anything else I should know? I understand that the 4L SOHC motor is a different animal from the OHV engines I'm used to, Any advice would be appreciated!

Most quality kits come with new sprockets. I would get one that does. I have used a few kits from different brands, and have not had issues with any of them. If you have any doubt, get the kit with the stuff for the balance shaft. If it doesn't have on you just have extra parts.

Those tools are 100% needed. You will also want a set of external torx sockets, and a replacement for the rear cam plug. It is often harder to get the rear cassette fished back in than it is to get it out.

Also, the rear jackshaft bolt is left-handed thread. I think the rear-facing cam bolt is as well, but I can't remember for sure.

Thanks for the info! :icon_thumby: I want to get this done before fall. With all the cheap "for parts" Rangers and Explorers in the local adds, I might just find one to rebuild and then swap. Someone told me today about a '04 Explorer (4x4, 4L SOHC, 190K) with a bad tranny for sale near-ish to me, which leads to another question; I read somewhere that '03 and up 4L's have an improved chain tensioning setup over the old ones, true? Although I guess I'll replace those parts when I rebuild anyway...

Thanks for the help!! :D
