I have a question you may be able to answer me on: is it true that the 1987 and '88 Ranger XLT pickups used a brushed-aluminum tailgate with the Ford oval logo on the right side (like the 1989-92 Ranger XLTs do)?

I also wonder if my theory can be proven in a 1987 and/or '88 Ford Ranger brochure.

Thank you,

Ben

I believe that the brushed aluminum tailgate that you refer to is just a trim piece. depending on what trim level your truck has, it might or might not have that brushed aluminum trim. the base Ranger did not, the XLT and possibly the XL did. Probably could get it as an option in the XL level...

The 1st gates had Ford in big letters where the oval was on later years. The gates themselves were the same, it was just that brushed trim panel that was different.

I can confirm adsm08's statement. I have that trim piece. Also under the trim is the classic Ranger tailgate except that it has a bunch of holes in it.

started in 86 model years on the xlt trim line, same as a regular ranger tailgate, just with holes for the panel... i had an 88 with the panel but have seen them as early as 86, but early panels had letters, not a badge..

I had one on my 88 that was actually from a 90 something when I swapped on a new box...I pulled it off to discover all the holes...but I managed to fix the rust before it got the better of the tailgate.
