If cats aren't as close as can be what would happen?it may not run correctly?
They are more efficient the closer they are to the engine. I am not really familiar with the magic that happens inside them but it might be an exhaust temperature thing. Most OEM's have them as close to the engine as possible.

My credo
Lead follow or get out of my way
O2 sensors have to be hot to work... the further downstream they are the less heat. They do make heated O2 sensors that speed up the process and keep them at operating temperature.

I used the $100 tri-y headers from ebay. With a 351, you gotta trim the frame rail on the passengers side a little, maybe 3/4 of an inch wide by however long to clear both tubes. Supposedly with a 302, they fit witout trimming. Pics are here
I had to trim mine almost as much yours and it's a 302.not sure who got it to fit with trimming it I would like to know.

So Im trying to install my headers I got on ebay.when I first tried fitting them a while back It appeared I just needed to shave down some of the bellhousing to make them fit.after several attempts I can't get the driverside to stop touching the bellhousing.i took so much off the housing that the end of the header is now touching the clutch fork.any ideas how I can savage these headers?a buddy of mine said try bending them over.has anyone done this with success?if so was heat involved?

I think they're all pretty much the same, but these are the ones i bought specifically. I'm really impressed with what you get for the money, they look nice and include all the hardware and gaskets you need. As for the trans, I'm running an m5r2. It didnt take much grinding on the bellhousing to make it fit, but both sides just barely hit before i made room.
The t5 must be alot different then your m5 because I can grind off enough off bellhousing to stop headers from touching.i took off so much that the headers are now hitting the clutch fork now.i don't know what to do next.any ideas?

Without a pic of the situation i couldn't even guess. Maybe someone with a t5 can chime in. I hope youre talking about your clutch fork and not your shift fork though, if you're hitting your shift fork, youve got bigger problems... Anyways, mine has an internal slave, so no clutch fork to get in the way

My credo
Expect nothing and I’m like really disappointed
What about the 96-02 V-8 Exploder exhaust manifolds. I agree they might be a lil restrictive, but then again the 5.0 beats anything in a Ranger...lol. Ill try to send some pics. Doing a swap right now and haven't decided on 5.0 or 4.0 for my 88 Ranger 2WD.
They fit easily and work great on the 5.0. The 4.0 is anemic compared to the explorer 5.0 set up.

I'm running tri y headers.they fit well kinda.when I put the driverside on I thought they were barely touching bellhousing where The hole is for the clutch fork cable is.i was wrong!you'd would think I'd have a hard time bolting it down to head but not the case.they bolt right up without any issue.but the more I take off the closer it gets to clutch fork.now it's currently touching the fork.
