1990 5sp starts fine. Runs very smoothly, when it's running. Then sputters to a stop after 6 minutes of running.
Bought this Ranger a couple years ago with mechanical problems. No oil pressure. Finally got around to fixing it - oil pump screen completely clogged with gunk. New bearings, timing belt, and we're back in operation.
Replaced the in tank fuel pump, filters, plugs, plug wires, and one coil.
Starts great, but after 6 min it just dies. If I try to start it right away, it won't. But if I wait 2 minutes - fires right up. If I keep the idle up around 2000 it doesn't die. Just runs and runs. Let up on the gas - dies with a little back puff through the intake.
Check engine light didn't come on until recently, so I pulled the codes.
KOEO: 11
KOER: 98 28
Memory: 28
I changed out the right coil pack. Nothing
I had the ignition module checked out at my NAPA, passed fine. Made sure it got good and warm on the tester.
So, I'm stuck! If it was a diesel I could tell you within minutes of the problem, but I just don't know the truck well enough yet. Anyone had issues like this before? Or know what I should try next?
A long time ago, I had a 924 with CDI ignition that did this same thing. Turned out that when the CDI unit got hot, it would shut off. Let it cool down, it would run again. Faulty CDI.
Any help would be great. Thanks!
