Ya got me on that one, they both say theyre for 31 spline shafts but i bet the difference in diameter (3/4 or 7/8) would be the difference between a 28 and a 31 spline shaft? i just checked the specs on the 1830LR that i installed in my 7.5 but they dont list a shaft diameter like they do with the 8.8 lockers?

I've had the parts guys ask me that here at my dealership when ordering 8.8 parts too. The diameter they are talking about is the cross-shaft in the carrier. The 7/8 shaft is called a high-torque and I'm pretty sure all the Explorer 31 spline axles are the 7/8 shaft. Does it still have the I.D. tag on the cover? A dealership should be able to tell you by running the numbers which one it is.

yeah they are talking about the cross pin..anyone know the diameter of the one in a 31 spline?

the EX 8.8 should have a 7/8" cross pin if it has disc brakes. i have a 3/4" cross pin in my 8.8, but it is from a 91-94 EX.

why dont you measure it?

the ranger 8.8's have a smaller cross pin, i think it's maybe 1/2" it seems like. i used to have one, but i sold it recently, so i cant check

The difference in which brakes? Might explain why I found both the 3/4" & 7/8" in three different places. Might want to do as said and measure the pin or see what the return policy is on un-used parts. Mine with the No-Slip/28 spline is the 3/4". Even the Richmond Gear site has bad info.

All exploder 8.8s have 7/8" cross-pin. All 31 spline 8.8s post 86 have 7/8" cross pins.

Ranger (and other 28 spline 8.8s) are 3/4" cross-pin.

I recomend the Aussie Locker over the Lock-Right.

^what he said. Shouldnt be axle shaft diameter...its center pin diameter

I have in my posession a carrier from a '92 Lincoln Town car that is outside that statistic... it's a 31 spline 8.8 with a 3/4" cross pin
