Aussie, Lockrite, or Detroit for Ranger DD?

R1.jpg

that looks like a fun ride, have to give you props on that one...is that from UA?

my truck is 80-90% street, rest is dirt/gravel roads and packed trails. had a LockRight in my swb tracker and it was noisy, chirped tires in tight turns, and did jerk a little. have a Detroit in my reg cab ranger and it is noiseless, much smoother when engaging, not noticeable in turns unless i really get my foot into the gas pedal, and i like it MUCH better than the LockRight.

Highly disagree. Powertrax can say what they want but the No-Slip isn't smoother, it's worse, I'll never own another one.

The Aussie, lock-right and Detroit will all be similar in manners. I've had the Lock-Right, No Slip and Aussie and the Aussie is the smoothest and the No-Slip is the worst. My buddy (member "Grunizzle") recently replaced his No-Slip with a Detroit and much prefers the Detroit.

Many others can't complain about the No-Slip, and having owned all three of the lockers already mentioned, MY No-Slip is least noticeable to drive. The Detroit chirps and clunks all over the place. My Lock-Rite was noisy with all its ratcheting noises. But my No-Slip in my B4000 has never given me problems, its quiet, reliable and provides 100% lock up when I need it. And I can't remember the last time I chirped a tire. But every time I drive my dad's jeep which has the Detroit, you can't NOT chirp a tire. And it clunks at weird times with a noise that makes you question whats going on in the differential. Can't say the same about my No-Slip.........

I am going to agree with everything hahn has said about the no slip. I hate it. I will never own another one. Did it work? MOST of the time. Was it smooth? MOST of the time.
I can't even begin to count how many times I would be driving on or off road and the damn thing would not lock up like it should. The amount of throttle it would require to get it to lock in a tight turn was stupid. That is why I am calling it unreliable. It is significantly more quirky than any other locker I have used. I think my no slip was the MOST noticeable to drive because it was the most unpredictable.

My detroit, sure its not as smooth, it scrubs the tires more, but I know it is going to work all the time. Also for whatever reason, my no slip wouldnt work with synthetic gear oil...

And in my experience, the no slip has made more horrendous noises than my detroit ever has. And yes it was installed properly...

The proof is in the video. The inside tire is spinning and the locker wasn't locked. Like I've said before I've driven the No-Slip in my Dakota and a friend's ranger (who now has the Detroit and likes it much more than the No-Slip), exactly the same behavior in both, I'll never buy another one, period. I never said the No-slip hasn't given me 100% lockup, it locks, no doubt about that, but the amount it lets the inside tire spin before it locks is unacceptable, and makes it intolerable to drive. I can hardly tell my Aussie is there.

This.

Ya it was, that launch is what killed the detroit.

Of all the lunch box style lockers, in my experience (through those I wheel with) the aussie has been the most consistant and reliable. Id do what I could to run one of them, or a full carrier locker.... even if I had to pegleg for a while to save my pennies to afford it.

I tried to run an Aussie for my D35. Long story short I ended up with a Lock-Rite after selling it, and can't really complain. Only issue I have with it is that it clunks and binds when I leave my hubs locked in but drive in 2wd on the street, specifically around tight turns. I guess thats to be expected though. In 4lo though its amazing...

I have heard nothing bad about the Aussie. Sounds like a solid unit.

An Aussie/Lock-Rite up front and a No-Slip/Lock-Rite are hard to beat offroad for the occasional offroad wheeler who spends most of their time on the street. Also much cheaper than full carrier lockers such as the Eaton E-Locker, ARB or Detroits. Might not be quite as strong as the full carrier (in terms of design, the stock carrier usually fails first) ones, but you get what you pay for.

Hmmm...I was planning on getting a No-Slip today for 150...supposed to be NIB. Deal, right?

Yeah...

I recently removed the synchro rings (What makes it different from other lockers) from the No-Slip in my Dakota and I like it 100x more.

Better now? I still can't wrap my head around why your No-Slip acted so much differently than mine other than you have a manual and I have an auto. But Gruinzzle had the same problem too it sounds like.

What ever the reason, neither of mine have every done what you describe :icon_confused: I liked my No-Slip so much that I put another one in my explorer 8.8 this summer, and it drives exactly the same. It its quiet and engages smooth on tight turns. All is good for now, knock on wood.

So is it really that easy to just remove the syncro rings? Then what it acts just like a Lock_rite I presume?

Grunizzle's and mine worked just like Powertrax says they should work. The synchro system prevents the locker from locking when the wheels are traveling at different speeds (such as in a corner). In order to get it to lock while turning, the inside tire must spin and then match the speed of the outside tire. In a tight turn it's very jerky. Now with the synchros gone it works just like a Lock-Right/Aussie/Detroit. It instantly locks when I put my foot down and it's much smoother and more enjoyable to drive.

i've been around all 3, and more... i still like the aussie's and detroits IF a select-able is not an option. not an option for me, b/c i'm a poor college student. i got the aussie b/c of the deal i got it. now if i find a good deal on a detroit and i have the extra money, ill swap it out.
