What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

well when it warms up to near 10 degrees this afternoon, I will give the prime it method a try.

I do need to do a transmission fluid change, so that is something to think about. got the filter, now I need the fluid. what does a shift kit cost?

AJ
For fluid, the red bottle Valvoline Maxlife is the correct and cheapest way to buy it, if I mind right. Mercon V is expensive and I’ve never found it in bulk other than that stuff. I’d buy a dang 5 gallon bucket if I could.

Transmissionpartsusa has the Transgo shift kit for about $62. O rings and gasket for the reverse servo plus the valve body gasket set is like $10. Apparently they don’t have the one-piece separator plate anymore.

well... today i tried the prime it method and it still took a little longer (not much) to catch and it stumbled and died as soon as I let off the key. started it back up again and it fired off right away. let it warm up in the driveway, locked the hubs in because the roads are for crap here. shoveled the drive while it warmed up. then drove it out on the town, and at a stop light the engine died. started right up again. but it felt like it had a big enough miss that it died. did it again 10 min later at another light.

At this point I am not sure if it is a fuel related issue or an electrical/ spark related issue. when it warms up I will dig deeper...

AJ

I did much more than average Ranger related today... started off doing an oil change on the '97, while there with a 15mm socket toed in one side 1/2 turn since the front tires aren't wearing great... then went to Harbor Freight to get some stuff, went to open the tailgate and it wouldn't open which hasn't happened before... got home and tore into it trying to lubricate stuff but the problem was the handle levers had both bent outward and the passenger side one wasn't hitting the linkage... should buy a new handle but gambled on bending the cast aluminum arms back into shape... worst case I still have the original tailgate... but it works GREAT for now...

Suppose it could even be a computer issue. Do you have a fuel pressure tester? That’s an easy way to help rule out a fuel issue. Check it on one prime, couple primes and running both idle and whacking the throttle. I bought one from Harbor Freight after I realized the value. Then while it’s running I put a stethoscope or long extension or something on the injectors and take a listen, they should be tapping away nice and regular.

That and pull the vacuum line off the regulator, on the '91 Explorer I had for a while the regulator blew the diaphragm and it was getting a bunch of extra fuel through the vacuum line...

When was the fuel filter last changed?

When was the fuel filter last changed?
3 years ago... less than 10k miles ago anyways. under acceleration and load it drives fine, so I think the fuel is not being restricted. I am leaning towards FPR or a vacuum issue at this point. will look deeper into it when it isn't so damn cold out. supposed to be in the 40s and 50s Wednesday, and right back at arctic blast winds this weekend when I woiukld have time to mess with it. if nothing else, maybe it will get warm enough to melt all the snow and slush off of it and I will put it in the garage to mess with it.

what is the difference between the $16 rack and pinion mount bushings and the $26 bushings from autozone?

internet says not to reuse old bushings but mine look perfect.
internet also says buy polyurethane bushings but none are available at the various local auto parts stores.

I don’t have a good answer for that. I had thought about it when I had my green Ranger apart and ended up not doing anything with it because I was trying to hurry up and get it together and was fighting problems the whole way. Meant to look into it more and never did. Truck is broke again too along with me. Is what it is I guess.

Thinking of upgrading my 2024 2wd stx ranger and getting a 2025 xlt fx4 ranger.

Wife likes heated seats and we think 4x4 would be better when traveling to omaha during christmas and new years then 2wd we currently have. We could take the wrangler but you cant really carry longer or larger items in a wrangler... or tow decently

When I owned and managed the fleet of Rangers and S-10‘s, on the few that we would keep (cause the guys would trash them.), we would upgrade to urethane on anything we could. It lasted forever.

The’78 Marc V was also upgraded to urethane, just before I bought it, by the previous owner. That thing is massive and heavy, but it’s one thing I don’t worry about.

For what its worth, just a thought

I would say to retrofit them, but probably don't want to do that on a 2024. I'd do it on an older truck. Being here in middle GA, we hardly have a need for heated seats, but I wouldn't mind having cooled sometimes during the summer. Seriously considering later Mustang cooled seats for the 99 Ranger. Maybe even see about having it added to the F-100 seat and the FlowFits when they are recovered. If I happened across a 21 F-150 with them in the salvage yard, I'd certainly retrofit them into dad's (/my) truck, but it's paid for and I'm not about to trade it in.

Maybe find some heated seat covers? That wouldn't get you 4x4 though.

That's got me thinking, might have to investigate if anyone makes a viable active cooling seat cover that's fit my wants/applications.

Currently in the process of dropping a crate 3.0 in her. Cleaned all my hardware today and painted the valve covers.
