Get a bifurcated tool, place it between the two rods and twist. They will come apart with enough force, but you will probably tear the bushing from the looks of it.
The bushings are still available because they are still in use. 08 to 10 Super Duty uses them on the manual T-case shift linkage.
And yes, the flaring in the passenger side of the frame is factory design. The cat sits right there and would contact the frame if it didn't flare down like that. Both of mine have it. Very annoying when putting them on a lift because it puts the vehicle ever so slightly off kilter since it is in a lifting point.
Well after looking at the whole shifter assembly, taking one of those connectors apart would able me to remove the transmission, after breaking the kickdown lever the transmission almost fell out
