Today we had some great weather. So I decided to get back at it. My delay has been switching the t-case yokes, but the front yoke nut was rounded off. Which pissed me off! I needed the rear yoke to be a big cap 1330, and the front to be a normal 1330. They were backwards. So I drilled, grinded and chiseled the old nut off. And got the yokes switched and the original 1 piece rear driveshaft connected. A small project, but to me it was a major milestone.

The old rounded off...

The new big cap 1330 joint on the rear.

Next I think I'll route the oil system and prime the engine. Stay tuned.

Had a productive day!

Got a few things done today. Started off cleaning up the sharp edges on the oil filter relocation. I rounded the inside off to promote better flow in and out.

Next I selected the best spot for servicing the filter, and tried to keep it protected by the frame rail while offroading. I believe this was the best spot, but might make a rock shield for the filter. Then I got the engine primed with oil, and finished installing the cam synchronizer with the special tool.

I was moving along so well I decided, why not test for the factory '94 4.0 2-core radiator? Well.... The pics can show the lack of room for it. The lower hose dumps right where I put my oil filter, GREAT! Plus I don't have nearly enough room for the Thunderbird fan I want to use.

My fix for the fan will be a Griffin fan mounted under the core support. Stay tuned for that. Next step, finish the FEAD.

Also connected the heater core to the water pump and the special fitting on the back of the intake manifold I installed.

Not pictured, I managed to get the starter in, and wired up with the explorer wiring.

Looking good! You could gain some room by moving the radiator in to the core support, that's what I had to do get a fan in mine swap

Thanks Ford78. That's exactly what my intensions are for the radiator. Moving it right inside the core support, removing the cap might be a little difficult though, we'll see.

I managed to finish the remaining vacuum line connections, put 3qts of fliud in the trans, and get the negative battery cable all wired in. The only electrical connections I have left are the vss and the electric fan. :yahoo:

I'm happy to say I'm excited and getting close to fire this thing up. Just a few things left. I'm waiting for the new Griffin radiator to come in the mail. Also need another quart of fluid for the trans, I guess the m5od-r1 takes 3 quarts and the m5od-r2 takes 4. Then I need to fill the t-case, but want to get a new drain plug first, the old one is mangled. Other than that it needs a new custom front driveshaft, and a full exhaust.

Got the Griffin Radiator. Part number 1-26181-x. Fits very well tucked in the core support, now I just gotta modify the Thunderbird fan to fit this radiator. Its a little smaller than I'd prefer, but the fan is very powerful, so I think it will be a good match.

Is the thunderbird fan the same as the tarus fan if so on high it pushes some serious air

If you want a low profile double fan the contour / misiqe have some good flow

The Thunderbird fan actually moves more air than the Taurus fan, or so some claim. I now have enough depth for the fan, but the height and width on the shroud will need to be trimmed.

Small, but important update. I've been working the the Ranger here and there trying to get this radiator and electric fan situation resolved. I wasn't happy the the Griffin 26181-x. It was just too small. So I tried cutting up the core support a little on the bottom to mount a '94 4.0 2 core radiator. There's a difference between the '94 and '96+ radiators. In both mounting style and outlet position. Finally I got the '94 4.0 2-core to fit by angling the bottom of the radiator towards the bumper and keeping the top mount original, but it was kinda hacked, and I wasn't super thrilled with it. But, this way I got 4" total room for a fan. So the nice large Thunderbird fan won't work. So now I'm waiting for a new larger Griffin radiator and new Flex-a-lite electric fan. This should be the right one now. Hope to have the radiator and fan in on Sunday.

Got a working Radiator!

Had a nice day today, sunny and about 50 degrees. Found out the radiator I ordered, Griffin 26202-x fits and works perfectly. I had to cut up my core support a little, but its starting to rust and I have a replacement already. So a project for next summer will be the core support. Anyway, here's how the original core support looked (ignore the black rubber circles).

Here it is all prepared and ready for the Griffin 26202-x unit.

Then I made some aluminum brackets and coated them with a rubber tape so that they don't eventually distroy the radiator from rubbing.

Parts list: Griffin 26202-x, the hoses are Continental 60664 and 61301 (both cut to fit). The hoses worked great once cut.

Just enough room for the Flex-a-lite 398 fan. I already started filling the radiator with fresh coolant. Also installed the EGR block off plate I ordered off eBay. Still a bunch of odd and ends, but its coming along.

Bolted the starter in after a little bell housing plate grinding. Didn't need much. Got the trans and t-case filled with oil. Still no exhaust, but I decided what the hell.... So I put the battery in and fired it up for a few seconds. Sounds great. I have a running 5.0 in the Ranger!!!!! Still more things to go, but it runs!

Glad to hear you finally got her started...

SVT

I've said this before, but the weathers braking, so its time to get back on this.

A Ford contour fan is what I run, well ran until it hit a tree but it's a twin fan and a dual speed on top of that, it's really thin and most junkyards have a couple I paid $20 for mine
