Stangman92's '94 4x4 build

Im back !

Been a hell of a long time since ive worked on this project, mostly been riding all summer. Put a new battery in it a few days after Christmas. Spent my New Years finally making the exhaust. I used all 304 stainless for everything, used my new Lincoln pro-mig welder with Blue Demon 308lfc-o stainless flux core wire, worked well. Used one end of a v-band clamp for the flanges since Sanderson headers use flat flanges. Its all 2.5" up to the 2 into 1, then its all 3". Not show quality, but definitely air-tight. :icon_welder:

Loosly held up there

Got some more parts on order; pipe, gaskets, hangers, etc. Plan is to use the MagnaFlow cat, and Flowmaster super 44 in the pic. Gonna take the exhaust all the way to the back, instead of just dumped after the muffler like i had it with the 4.0. Stay tuned.

Looking good.

Nice, I like the stainless! Do you think you'll have any heat problems with the pipe close to the oil pan?

I hope not, i tryed to keep it away from the pan, while keeping the transmission, and the front driveshaft in mind. The exhaust is about an inch away from the pan, so i hope its enough.

More progress today. Decided to finally try and tackle the speedometer correction. The old 4.0 v6 left the new 5.0 v8 off by quite a bit, obviously. A while back i did some research on how to get a '94 Ranger corrected. The '95+ Rangers seemed to be easier. One guy on a forum said to use parts from an OBS cluster. So i bought a Cluster from a '91 F150. Pulled it apart, and things look similar to Rangers. So today i took apart the Rangers dash to get to the speedometer.

Here's how it started out, note: engine was still cold/warm

After removing the radio, ashtray/power outlet, dash bezel, and the clear gauge cluster the speedometer side simply pulls straight out.

Here's where things got interesting. On the OBS speedometer electronics there is an adjustment for calibration, its the red AND white knobs. On the Ranger there is a calibration its the green knob (center of pic)

notice here the red and white, OBS, vs the Rangers Green speedometers

OBS, adjustable for 4.2L v6 or 5.0+V8

The Ranger Speedometer

The Green knob simply turns like the volume knob on a stereo. So after a few minutes of turn the knob, and test, i was at idle on my scan tool, and at idle on the gauge. Great Right? Well i tried higher rpms, when the engine was at 1760rpm the gauge said 2000rpm. Pretty close i figured, and put everything back together. Then i though about it for an hour, and it bugged me:icon_rofl: I thought why cant i put the OBS electronic part in place of the Rangers? well its not that simple, they mount differently. The OBS electronics bolt on through the face of the gauges, the Rangers are super-glued on. So i cut them both up, modified the clear attaching bracket, and glued it back together. Basically i had to use the Rangers gauge face, and needle, and the OBS electronics and clear bracket.

The Ranger and OBS needles are different sizes, and the Rangers needle wont pop onto the OBS speedo, so i filled it with RTV, when it dries it will be good to go. I could have used the OBS needle, but it is chewed up and yellowed. So i opted to use the matching Ranger needle.

Currently I'm letting things dry, i did a test run and it works well and seems accurate. Still waiting on exhaust parts to come in the mail inorder to finsh up that. More to come.:icon_thumby:

So i was looking at my list of things left to do, which is shrinking by the day, lol. Anyways, i noticed hooking up my electric fan is one of the items. Upon further inspection i bought a Flexalite 398 fan, which is only a 1 speed fan at 2500cfm. Definitely enough, but I've already wired in the Volvo 2 Speed fan controller, and BMW temp control switch. Guess i forgot about that when i installed all this nearly a year ago. So i did some researching AGAIN for another electric fan, found one thats a 2 speed and in budget. Derale 18217. Moves 1800cfm on low, and 2400 on high, perfect for the Volvo controler. Its only 17 inchs around and less than 3 inchs thick, so it will actually fit much better than the currently mounted Flexalite 398. After this im DONE with electric fans for a while. Lol, i think ive switched 2-3 times already.
