Hey guys,

I just drained and resealed my differential to fix a leak and now I'm trying to refill it. I could have sworn I read that it had a 5 quart capacity somewhere, but that seemed a little high to me. I can't find the thread so does anyone know the capacity? It's a 94 4.0L 2WD. Thanks.

Yea, I did that and it came out to about three quarts. I'm just a little nervous because I was jammed in there between the gas tank and the driveshaft and couldn't quite tell if it was oozing out or the bottle was just having trouble staying in the fill hole.

Stick your pinky in the hole and feel the level. If it's up to the hole, you're fine.

I went to Lowe's and bought some small clear hose to put on the end of the bottles to put lube in my diff. The inside diameter I believe is 5/16".

+1 on the hose. They also sell them as hand pumps that attach to the fluid bottles at almost any auto parts stores. Got mine from Advance for about 10 bucks. Run the hose up to the fill hole but leave the bottle and pump sitting on the ground. Much easier to work with. I agree that rear dif hole is a little tight with the gas tank and drive shaft in the way.

Its easier to access lying on your back, slightly on your right side, feet sticking out from the back of your truck. Then you reach up and over the drive shaft with your left arm towards the fill hole. If you get the 1L bottles, you can cut the nib off the top and hold your finger over the tip until you have it positioned, then just squeeze it in.

I bought one of those pumps too. The one that goes on both 1 gallon and 1 qt. bottles, right? I'm not sure if I like mine because it seemed to suck about half of the lube back in the bottle when I let the plunger back up. I was hoping maybe the thick fluid was messing with the check valve, but I don't know. I will have to try water or something with it to see if it still does it before I render it defective and take it back. They don't question me when I take something back to Advance (I have a level 4 commercial account there).

Hey just a quick update. I put about 3 quarts in the diff and I figured that was as full as it was going to get (I actually spilled a bunch trying to wedge each bottle in so it was a bit less than 3 quarts). Anyway, on a whim I looked in my owners manual and there it was, the chart I thought I had read on here listing the capacity of just about everything that takes fluids in the truck. So, for anyone who has this question the answer is...

For a 94 Ranger both a 7.5 and a 8.8 take 2.4 Liters of gear oil. That comes out to 5.0 pints (U.S) or 4.2 pints (Imperial), also that equals 2.54 quarts. So it look like I'm all set.

Thanks for all the help guys.

By the way, I imagine this is correct for other certain other years as well but I don't know for sure so I'm not going to speculate. If anyone does know feel free to put it on here.
