Question about Marvel Mystery Oil

My 93 4.0 Ranger has the lifters ticking. Someone suggested I put some Marvel Mystery Oil in and see if that helps. My question is do you put it in and leave it like normal motor oil or do you put it in and let the truck run for a bit then change the oil? Never used it before but, have heard good things about it. If it did/does work it would save me a bunch of $$$ if not next year I get to pull the heads and change out the lifters. Thoughts, ideas? I have used seafoam before and you have to change the oil after running it for a little bit so, I just want to be sure I do it right.

Just replace a quart of oil with a quart of your regular oil and let it eat

I have seen that oil free up locked blocks. Should work fine. Better yet after using this, add Lucas to each oil change.

when i saw this thread, i googled "marvel mystery" and this is what came up... this is a picture of mysterio battling spiderman (both marvel characters)\

as for the oil... i've never heard of it, personally i wouldn't trust it, not sure how big of a name it is down south...

If you've ever seen motor oil turn to pudding you should know that Marvel Mystery Oil
is "The Silver Bullet" for dissolving that sticky slime.

I put half a bottle into my 4.0 engine 1-2 weeks before I change my oil

However I wouldn't expect it to "fix" the ticking on your 4.0.

Typically a ticking 2.9 is caused either by gummed/sludged lifters
OR by an oil pressure issue (the main and or cam bearings have excessive
clearance and the oil never gets to where it needs to go)

But on a 4.0 the lifters and oil pressure are almost never the cause.

What is the problem is that the pushrod sockets in the underside of the rocker arms gall along with the pushrod tips and the rockers bind in motion

The fix? replace the rocker arms that are galled. generally you replace the pushrods too

The cause? the oil feed hole in the top of the rocker arm does not "funnel" oil to
the pushrod tip & rocker arm socket efficiently

This can be corrected by using a moto tool to create a large champfer to catch more oil
and funnel it to the oil feed hole

I agree. I used to run Lucas through my Ranger religiously. Best stuff on the market. It even stopped my front crank seal from leaking!

Just dump a bottle of that in before you add the oil at every oil change and you should be golden.

Oh! And it silenced my lifters too! :icon_thumby:

Use with caution on a damaged or worn engine only, and keep the rpms to a minimum - this crap should never be used on a properly running engine, especially if you have a lead foot. It's the ticket for a bad motor to make it sound good, or to squeeze some more life out of a motor. The reason I say this, is it makes your oil thicker and can actually damage the oil pump at high rpm - and you lose the whole motor. Or, it will foam and then you get an oil starved motor. It doesn't happen to everyone, and might only be a reaction with certain oils, but there is enough controversy over it where I personally would rather be safe than sorry. Google it and check out all the people crying about motors that were perfectly good until Lucas was added. Or, you can try it yourself with those display gearbox things at the parts store - crank that sucker like you're trying to break it, and you can actually get the display model to foam the oil a little bit. If the motor needs a band-aid though, Lucas is perfect.

Lucas and Marvel are two completely different products with two completely different uses. Lucas is basically adding "cushion" to the oil and will make things run smoother when they are rough. Marvel is a water repelling, high detergent oil that will clean out sludge and carbon. I use a little in my fuel sometimes, a little in my oil sometimes, and I use it in all my seasonal engines as a good winterizing oil. Basically, when I put a marine engine up for the winter I'll pull the fuel line, fire it up, and feather the throttle and choke to burn up all the remaining fuel that I can, and when it's about ready to die for the last time, I'll give it a shot of marvel, and I'll put a shot of it down in the cylinder directly via the spark plug hole. I used to have an old briggs motor on a wood splitter that would only start if you put marvel in it to begin with, helped raise compression just enough to get it going by creating a better seal around the piston ring, and once it was going, it was fine if you kept the rpms up. Not to sound like a salesman or anything, but Marvel Mystery Oil is a great product that has been around forever - everyone really should have a bottle or two around if they have multiple engines to maintain, especially smaller engines. Even works as a fuel injector cleaner! I also put it in my 7.5cc methyl ethyl alcohol burning outboard on my radio control race boat when I put it away after every run.

I am a fan of Lucas products. Have used it forever. Never used Marvel oil before. Is it like that Engine Restore stuff??

I just described it in detail... You can even use it as gun oil! It's a cleaner and lubricant, and repels moisture.

Not trying to be a sh*t, but I beg to differ. When I had my Ranger, every day was race day! I beat the crap out of that truck/engine and the Lucas never made anything worse.

When I sold it in 2007 it had roughly 400,000km on it and I still see it on the road to this day.

The guy that bought it off me uses it for his landscaping business, so he beats it up too!

Cool!! Engine Restore lubricates and restores power to the cylinder walls as well. Never used it but I do llike Lucas.

my dad uses Marvel Mystery Oil for damn near everything (motor wise) dad uses it in the bikes, tractors, weed-eater, mower, and the vehicles, Infact next time I go out for something I need to pick up a couple bottles of it, it might help with the problems I'm having with the D35....
dad doesn't share his M.M.O. , lol :icon_rofl:
