need help with 99 ranger..new member.help :)

ok i have a 99 ranger with the 3.0 auto transmission and the other day i was driving home and left from a stop sign n noticed it didn't want to leave second gear.so i tried putting it in reverse and it wouldn't go into reverse.i was only a mile from the house so i drove home going about 30 mph. when i got home n parked the truck i continued my day using my fiances car. i got home and tried to move my truck and it wouldn't go into drive, but now reverse works fine? i'm just needing ideas on what my problem could be, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Some debris floating around in the valvebody maybe?

What is the service history of the trans (that you know of)?

to be honest i haven't looked it over..it died right after it was given to me by a friend who is in the army over in Germany right now, i would have to ask him, when he got stationed there it was a present to me, all i seriously know, is it was running fine, everything works in it, i just know i left from the stop sign and the truck wouldn't go into reverse or third gear (auto) when i cranked it back up it had reverse and no drive, i have no idea on the service history, do i need to check anything?

Make sure the fluid level is in spec.
