Modern trucks....when is enough...enough?

What're the 6.7's getting on mpg now? I'm hesitant to mention numbers I've heard, but they don't sound great... like, less than the 7.3's

16-18 highway, 20 in the right conditions.

12-13 towing.

No, not old 7.3 numbers. But 7.3 didn't deal with emissions. Didn't make this kind of power, and want this refined.

And the 6.2 is lucky to get 13 unloaded.

From what I see on a daily basis, people who have money to spend want nice things, nice campers like the 40' fifth wheels are heavy. no one can pull those with an F150 or 1500. People want nice stuff like tow trucks with the comforts of a Cadillac on the inside. People pretty much want the comforts of a daily driver with the option to tow anything and get the same gas mileage as a truck they owned 10 years ago that couldn't do a fraction of what a new truck can towing and interior design. Everybody has their limits on what they need and if you can afford what you want then so be it. i'm no hot shot with a 2018 dually but just a regular guy with a 99 ranger. That's all I need. Would I take a 2018 dually? of course. Its all about money. Like I said car manufactures have to one up themselves from the year before or their competition or they don't make money. duh.

contractors & ranchers luv 'em and they are actually safe to drive, unlike the big blocks that were crammed into anything back in the muscle car era.

How were big block muscle cars unsafe?

Anything is safe if the person behind the wheel knows how to handle it.

Which is why i dont think any idiot should be able to drive a pickup loaded close to half the gross of a semi.

You just said "anything is safe if the person behind the wheel knows how to handle it" Ask any trucker, towing a trailer with a load is no big deal. The trailer follows the truck as you drive, so safe truck, safe trip. Most accidents with trucks is from the idiot driver on their phone taking selfies driving down the highway and not paying attention to the safe drivers around them.

I drive truck.

I never said the trucks wernt safe, just that anyone who can fork over the cash for a 75000 dollar F350 and a 20000 lb camper can and go on down the road.

Not any training on what to do in a blowout, no inspections, nothing.

Think about it...

That's less about the truck and more the government. We've always been able to buy a medium duty truck and tow whatever within the confines on your class c license.

But it does kind of become ridiculous after awhile. Ranger is the new F-150, F-150 is the new F-250, F-250 is the new F-350 and so on. Not really gaining anything just our F-350 can tow more than the other guys for the moment until they one up us. Totally disregarding they already make trucks heavier than a '350. In 5-10 years are they going to bring back the Courier nameplate when the Ranger has grown to F-250 size and we need another "small" truck?

I would love a new dually if someone gave it to me. I would dump it so fast and pay off my house and put a huge dent in a new F-150.

Followed a roughly 80 year old guy on I90 on the return portion of our trip, was weaving all over the place as he was squinting over the dash of of his big old motorhome. The ones that kind of look like a Star Trek shuttle. "Lets make the biggest, worst handling thing we can come up with...and let anyone with a license drive it" :icon_idea:

Let's bring the ranchero back

That is the answer to a question that was never asked. :icon_twisted:

In regards to needing another small size pickup. Ranchero.

I'd rather have a Subaru Baja than that.

I have to agree with Dustin.... Trailer/RV should be an endorsement superseded by a CDL

I agree with the CDL for certain motorhomes. I see it everyday. Anyone with a regular drivers license can drive a Class A motor home with air brakes and not require any special training or licensing. Seems pretty stupid to play two sides of the law when it comes to air brakes on motor home and air brakes on a semi. A Class A motorhome can be larger and heavier than some fully loaded semis, yet the owner does not need anything more than a regular drivers license. Pretty dumb. I think people need to take tests on owning anything more than a basic vehicle like a car or truck. You'd be surprised how clueless people are about their own motorhomes. They literally know nothing except where the bed and toilet it.

A bed and a toilet are all you need.

Empty gooseneck on a one ton requires a DOT # and to stop at weigh stations. Meanwhile Grandma can fly on by with her fifth wheel. Never has made any sense to me.

Not trying to begin a war but...

How much power does anyone need?
...
I'm just looking for sprited discussion....

Interesting - usually, I see this on the motorcycle forums.

Anyone with a driver's license can get a motorcycle learners after just passing the written test. Then they can go to the store and purchase a liter bike capable of sub 2 second 0-100km/h/>250km/h top speed.

Other countries have GDL - licenses (governed to <100km/h, cc limits, etc for 1st year) etc. And your plates denote your license status, so cops, etc can tell at a glance.

Saskatchewan implemented a "G01" endorsement to license - >4,600kg (~10k lbs) trailer. They also got stickier about the air brake endorsement.

As far as trucks go; F-250s have stalled at 4,500kg/9,990lbs to avoid Transport Canada/DOT. And it is the 3/4ton getting squeezed - F-150s with 3,270lb payloads/13,200lb trailer rating are almost in same range. F-250 is hurt by the components (Frame, engine, axles, etc) weighing 1k more that F-150 and SAE J2807 requiring minimum weights on tongue means rating differences are getting small...
