Modern trucks....when is enough...enough?

I see your point about bikes, but id still rather be rear ended by some jackass on a crotch rocket running 120mph then some old guy in a F350 towing a 40ft 5th wheel camper who realized that he cant stop as fast as he can empty from 65mph.

Just today, i seen a guy on the expressway pulling a pry, 27-30ft 5th wheel, towing a bass boat with a superduty. I had the cruise set at 67 (limit is 65) and he blew past me like i was standing still.

Its to bad they couldnt put some sort of sensor that detects when youre hooked to an insane amount of weight, say, 10000lbs or above, that governs the truck to 65. That way you still can enjoy your 500ftlbs of overkill on accleration but not get stupid on the big roads.

As far as trucks go; F-250s have stalled at 4,500kg/9,990lbs to avoid Transport Canada/DOT. And it is the 3/4ton getting squeezed - F-150s with 3,270lb payloads/13,200lb trailer rating are almost in same range. F-250 is hurt by the components (Frame, engine, axles, etc) weighing 1k more that F-150 and SAE J2807 requiring minimum weights on tongue means rating differences are getting small...

There isn't a terrible amount of price difference between a F-150 and a comparable F-250.

I like my '02 F-150's size but when it comes time to update I have often pondered if I should just skip the F-150 and go for the 250.

Define comparable? A well optioned ecoboost f150 is 55k, that same diesel 250 is over 70k.

I know when I bought my 2011 ecoboost I oaid 48k, and an identical f350 was 62k.

I almost ordered a 2017 f350 earlier this month to replace my Tahoe and sticker was 71k

That's sort of my pet peeve: Pretty much everywhere, over 1,500lbs you are supposed to have trailer brakes. So, why not put 5 pin* connectors on everything over a Focus that gets the trailer tow package. And offer the monitoring/integrated brake controller as part of the package. (Integrated trailer tow is $350 option on F-150)**

Then if the trailer wiring circuitry detects a load, vehicle automatically switches into tow/haul mode. Governing tow/haul mode would be easy to do, but what does Ford set as limit? Texas has 85mph interstates.***

*4 pin trailer connector plugs into 5 pin auto, so it wouldn't affect existing 4 pin trailers, but would easily allow for implementation of trailer brakes. When I'm on my bike, I'm just as worried about the guy in the Escape with a 3,500lb trailer as the one in the F-350 with the 5th wheel finding out they can't stop like they thought they should.

**Let's use some of the current technology - monitor tire pressure on trailer, add better braking (up to/including anti lock/anti jack knife), reversing for idiots, etc. To keep it Ranger focused, it one option I hope they add to the new Ranger.

***One, of course, can use GPS (on SYNC anyways) to determine locale and govern speed to the local truck limit when towing. If you over ride Ford & your insurance are notified (same sort of net-nanny which neighbor's daughter got to get reduced insurance as new driver). No warranty/no insurance would slow a few down.

Why not just limit all cars than? Gps max speed need on the road?

Gas F250 is only $60k, close enough for comparable. And Diesel F150 will probably have $6-7k uplift based on FCA's delta on their Ram Trucks.

So, while there is $5-10k delta; do you get 15% more truck (If you wanted crew cab with 8' box answer is h3ll ya, as it isn't available in the 1/2ton). :icon_twisted:

That's going to part and parcel to autonomous driving; speeders are soon only going to be those with antiques.

An F-150 optioned how I want it (XL with chrome bumpers, 4wd, rubber floor, alloy wheels, factory trailer brake controller, bucket seats, SCAB, 5.0, locking 3.73 rear) is around $40k.

A gas (that is a biggie) F-250 that is comparable aside from a factory installed gooseneck and roof lights (gotta have those) was like $42k.

I haven't done it since they came out with the 16's but last year it was a pretty close race. This is just the build your truck thing on Ford's website, I haven't compared between the two in real life at all.

EDIT: Just built a beautiful F-250 for $42,140. Just built a fairly comparable F-150 for $41,140. I know it isn't what everyone would want but it is what I would want.

Go drive a gas one ton. You'll quickly realize that motor is out of place. It has no business in a truck that big with any load behind it.

As for part and parcel, it's exactly the same thing. If you want to limit one kind of driver, why not all?

Fair enough. Best of luck finding either of those

I know a guy with a 2015 crewcab long box 4wd superduty with a 6.2 who tows 14k on a regular basis and it does just fine.

I know they would be a special order.

Trucks are either for work or status symbol, very little in between on a lot.

Chrome grilles are gaudy anymore, carpet stains, I don't like big ipad radios, I don't want a full length console, I am not too good for a collum shift, I can back my own trailer without a stupid knob on the dash, painted bumpers rot out, I don't want highway gears, I hate leather, diesels are a maintenance nightmare...

By the time I whittle crap off I don't like from a typical lot truck there isn't much left I do like.

Unless he's towing with a dually or a fifth wheel he's exceeding rated capacity. Weren't you just bitching about this?

Everybody tows with a gooseneck around here... bale toters and flatbeds galore.

I quite the opposite. I want to want to be in the rig I drive. Interior material is very important. I'll pass on the chrome though.

Same here, I have been in my truck for 12 years and 130k miles. Only thing I would change is the carpet, much easier to clean the rubber floor in my Ranger

I am not real partial to chrome vs painted bumpers when new but like 5 years in a lot of painted bumpers look pretty bad.
