Proper eye PPE for plasma cutting

Does anyone have any suggestions for proper eye PPE when using a plasma cutter?

I only have one good eye so I'm pretty obsessed with keeping it protected. I've seen anything from regular sunglasses to a welding helmet so a real broad range.

I'm using my goggles from my oxyacetylene. They are a #5 shade. All you need is UV protection, and then whatever shade works for you. Any welding helmet has UV integrated.

It's a hot metal burning/cutting operation, so I would thing using the same PPE that is appropriate for oxy-acrtylene cutting should be fine. It might not hurt to Google what the manufacturers of plasma cutters recommend.

I just did a little Googling. Below is a link to a Miller forum. Seems to be a lot of concensus to using a #5 shade with UV protection.

One thing to note is using a welding helmet or a face shield in conjunction with dark glasses will give full fave protection from splatter and sparks. That's something I like.

I have recently gotten a better helmet that has different modes for grinding or oxy-acetylene/plasma cutting. I wear safety glasses with a full face shield for drilling and grinding operations, whether at work or home.

I started off using oxy goggles but switched to my fancier welding helmet on the "grind" setting which works pretty good

I have a Optrel Panoramaxx Welding Helmet coming; that has a grind mode so i think I'll just use that. I wear prescription glasses so I'd need something that fits over that and a helmet will do the trick.

The new electronic helmets are awesome. Clear enough to use just as a face shield, then dark enough to make an arc weld disappear if you turn em all the way up.
