A friend of mine junks cars for a living. He must be doing pretty good at it since he just bought himself a used rollback. But onto my story. He dropped off a free 98 Cherokee with a non-cad Dana 30 with 3.55 gears and rolling on 31's in my driveway! Told me that I could pull whatever I wanted from it as long as he gets it back by the 9th so he can take it to the scrap yard.

I know I'm going to hear it from the "Why not wait till you get the money for a D44?" people. Did I mention before that it was FREE?!? If its free, and I have a use for it, I'm all over it. I had a few questions for the guys running the long arm kits on their Dana 30's. Dimensions and stuff like that. I was going to hit my local steel supply yard and weld up my own long arms. But I was hoping for some measurements so I can get into the ballpark without making them too long or too short. Any help would be appreciated.

Onto my next question, I was going to swap a 8.8 with 3.73 gears into the back of my truck when I was going to do the front swap. The only problem is that I can't seem to find reverse cut 3.73 gears for the 30 without breaking the bank. I did mention before that if it was free I was all over it?? But seriously, everybody seems to want $200 or more for 3.73 gears. Craigslist, Ebay, and other forums are all the same. Would it be just cheaper just to leave the 3.55 gears in the 30 and go find matching gears for the 8.8?

Take a look at my build thread, the click me is in my build thread and it shows everything that I have done when I did my D30 SAS.

Heres a quick search on google for gears from Yukon, they are a good name in gears.

As for long arms, these are what I used and the price has gone up on them in a year but alot has improved on them plus they have a huge adjustibility too. And if you do decided to go with a D44 later, then you can make the longarms work on them by just welding the appropriate brackets to the D44. Not saying that those are the longarms that you should go with but I do recommend using a set for ease of installation, two frame mounting points vs. four.

People will say to scrap out the jeep and sell the parts for a D44 and you can do that but I like the simplicity of the D30. Plus I had also got my D30 for free too. As for making longarms, Im not sure one what exactly measurements are needed to make it but you do want to make a set that you can fine tune your axle and whatnot under your truck.

Anymore questions we are here to help.

30's with 3:73's are pretty common, especially in xj's and zj's with auto trannys.

Yup, theres a lot of ranger 8.8's out there with 3.55's....

i might have some 3.55 gears somewhere for the 8.8 actually. i can hook up for cheap plus shipping (if i can find them)

i think its the 8.8 in pontotoc. just have to make it worth my time for pulling them (axle is already out) and gas for driving to ups store to ship them lol

Well it seems I the lucky one that didn't get the right gears. I think I'll send a hate letter to Jeep letting them know how much their products suck!!!

LOL!!! JUST KIDDING!!!!!

How much are we talking about here?

If it's the axle in Pontotoc, idk when I'm gonna get down there again. But I'll do it $20 plus shipping. Shipping would probably be around $25 or so unless I can get by with a flat rate shipping box! Lol.

Check your local JY's if you new them soon soon.

Get a build thread started on this if you already havent...and dont forget the pictures either.

oh and yeah, those long arms----- are expensive. the cost is what made me go back to the d35 ttb idea. i can do the swap for a bout half the price and still have long arms, real hubs, and xj coils lol. i just recently sold my xj d30 housing actually.

but yeah, like bryan said, build thread! now. w/ pics!

I know all about the long arms being expensive. That is the reason I want to fabricate my own. The way I figure it, I can weld my own long arm setup for a fraction of the cost of some of these companies out there. And as for a build thread, the link is there in my signature. I just haven't updated it in awhile.
