Going full circle

Wow, that pre-bled slave didn't have nothin on it first time, second push it grabbed right on.

I have a problem in the drive train, something won't turn. I'm wondering if the old pilot bearing fell apart maybe. I had a time getting the transmission to woble on in there, but it seemed to be going, except the last milimeter or so it was having problems. I'm worried the problem might have been the old pilot bearings came apart?

I'm about ready to drop the TC and then pull the transmission back to take a look. I already put 2 qts of fluid in the tranny, should I drain it or just keep it level, I'm hoping not have to take it off the jack, if I can get past it well enough to locate and fix the problem
The shifter will move a small amount left and right but not measurably, and fore and aft even less, not into any gear slot

First try loosening the bellhousing bolts and see if the bind goes away.

By chance would you have two long bolts in the same diameter and pitch of the bellhousing bolts? I have a pair I use that lets me slide the tranny home, and if needed to slide the tranny back away from block a little for some inspection.

If the shifter won't move, the top plate needs to come off, one of the shift forks isn't in the right place

I wound up tearing it down and putting it up. It will be a few days before I get another chance to mess with it :/

Well, I'm hoping to be able to get this sorted and fixed tomorrow, or at least soon
The shift lever will go into a slot in the shift cover but doesn't want to shift anywhere.
The front shaft turns 3 times and the output a bit over 1.
I'm not really sure even what to look for

this is the open slot that will accept the shifter but doesn't want to shift to any other spot

I believe this is where it starts and stops

This is the tranny I bought from one of the Minnesota rebuilders who shipped it to me in an empty cardboard box. I believe they got crappy because I did not wish to return a core (my original tranny)
Still, I think the most recent problem started when the TC was not aligned well and it stripped the main shaft out the back, and that is why my cousin tore it down, to replace the main shaft. He said he found it somewhere but we didn't discuss it long.

I just think it's in here or the shift forks that it's refusing to proceed, and I do not wish to force it.
Any ideas? All will be greatly appreciated :)

That shift cover will not shift in any direction, it also is not the shift cover I had on it before.
I specifically know this because the cover on my original had two connectors on it that the minnesota shift cover was without, and I took my old shift cover off the original and used it, also after the shaft stripped and I put the original back in until I got the shaft replaced, which I now have done.
The cover he put on it has the connectors that this transmission never had before

Scratch that last remark, I got it sorted out and have a cover that does not belong to me and my cousin has a problem he doesn't know anything about

This is the original 93 shift cover that has been used on two transmissions, counting the rebuilt I got 2 or 3 years ago. It has been every mile the truck has ever gone

It has the 2 connections, as does the new one the cousin sent back on it

If anyone will tell me how to get these shifters freed up I might go ahead and use my new shift cover ;)

My shift cover that came the Minnesota Tranny had no connectors on the cover, why I used the old one those miles. The cousin used another cover that had the connections, and where the cover that did not have them he alone can know. I might get to talk to him tomorrow, but if my nephew is here we might have it installed, because by the time the nephew has to go I need it installed, already busted enough stuff for this little piece of this project

I'm still in a fog here, that's my cover and he added the plugs.
But how am I supposed to make this thing work?
It won't go in gear. Has it got to be installed to go into gear?
I had it totally installed, pressed the clutch pedal and all, it still wouldn't shift into any gears
What could possibly be the deal?
Both shift covers provide the same results. I tried them both outside the case and won't budge

I'm taking a wild guess here, as I'm not real familiar with their rebuilding, and transmissions internally. Fifth picture, internals, it looks like the rear (on the right) synchro ring is engaged. I'm thinking that both need to be in neutral when the top cover goes on for the shift forks to align correctly. May not be it, and sorry if my terminology is off.

Thanks Robbie, I'll check that out. I actually flipped that to the left when I looked in there.
It clicked right in, but not knowing what I was doing I pushed it right back where it had been'
I'll definitely check that out next time I get the chance to work on it. Thanks again man

Yeah, push the rear collar forward to the middle, it's in first gear, wiggle the middle fork around a bit and try to push it forward a bit too, might need to put a little bit of lube on the detents to get it moving freely. It's not going to be super easy to move, remember the shift linkage is like 2' long... when you put the top cover on everything should be in neutral.

While the top cover is off is the perfect time to fill it with fluid, right about 3 quarts but you can see the fill plug so easy to stop at the right time...

Thanks Scott, awesome. I usually fill it through the shift opening inside the cab just before filling it up.
I never really knew where it might come gushing out at but I suppose it's fairly air tight
The book says 2.7 qt capacity. Thanks again Scott, I sure wish this hadn't happened because it's caught me in the worst way at the worst time, but I suppose there's always a silver lining somewhere, if we look around enough

On a 4x4 there's a seal on the tail housing so it can't leak out, on a 4x2 the driveshaft is the rear seal so you can't fill those before you put them in unless you aren't going to tip it over...

When I just did mine I decided to fill it with the top off, I was going to go through the shifter hole but went this way... I couldn't remember if it was this or the Tracker transmission I'd done that took FOREVER to fill through the shifter hole, after looking at your picture of the shift tower (honestly didn't even look at mine other than cleaning it up and putting the new seal in) that would have worked just fine too... but easy to watch for the fill hole with the top off :)

I've gone by the capacity which should be fairly accurate, 2.7 qt and I use maybe 2.5 and top it off after a couple times around the block.

The rear end is the only one I've never found a real easy way to go

I've got to take care of my business today so it will likely be tomorrow before I can get back to this, then it's supposed to rain some every day the next week :/

I found some transmission fluid today and came in hoping to slap that cover on and be done with it. My nephew came by to help me get it done and we commenced to putting the shift cover on and getting ready to put it under the truck
.....BUT!.....
The shift cover still doesn't want to go on, nor does it seem willing to shift when it gets there.

Nothing really looks wrong, I have two transmissions and two shift covers, but neither will allow anything to shift.

I can get the shift base set into its slot but it will not shift anything in any direction, neither shift cover, neither transmission.
What am I doing wrong?
