New to this forum, and looking for advice on my path to fix a non running truck for my stepson. The truck would not start after he stopped at the convenience store. I have not verified fuel tank level but the gauge says 1/2 and he says there are no issues with fuel tank level.
Here is what I have done thus far. I am leaning towards fuel pump because I think it is the faint noise if I crawl under the truck and have someone turn the key to on, I can't hear it standing next to the truck with the gas cap off.
1. I sprayed starter fluid in the air intake and the truck will turn over momentarily so I have eliminated spark issues.
2. Removed inertia switch. Cleaned with contact cleaner and tested. Ohms=0.1 across contacts.
3. Fuel pump fuse is not blown. Cleaned with contact cleaner and reinstalled.
4. I don't have a 12v source for testing the fuel pump relay, but I can feel it clicking when the key is turned.
5. I can't locate the fuel rail test connection so I disconnected the connection between the the fuel filter and the fuel rail. Turned the key and no fuel flow. The fuel filter was change about 9 months and 13k miles ago.
Tomorrow I am am planning to pull the truck bed off so I have access to the fuel pump. This will allow me to verify power to the fuel pump and flow before the fuel filter. If I have power to fuel pump and no fuel flow, the pump is bad and needs to be replaced. If no power to the pump the relay is bad. If I have power and flow the fuel filter is clogged.
Is this wrong thinking, or is there an easier way to troubleshoot this issue? Thanks for the help, I am mechanical but not electrically skilled.
