Hello, I have a 1983 Ford Ranger with a 351windsor and an AOD transmission (both from 1983). My tranny won't shift out of first. I've narrowed it down to either a stuck valve or a stuck governor. My question are the valves on the valve body supposed to be pushed in and out easily or are they tougher? I am just wondering if there is a way I can check each valve myself. If not I may just take it down to the local tranny shop. Thanks!

The valves move under pressure. Make sure your tv cable is adjusted correctly, try manually shifting from 1st to 2nd, it should shift. If it still dont shift, take that trip to the shop...

The valves should move freely, if there weren't any springs behind them. But there are, so without taking it apart you probably won't move them much.

does it have manual low, engine braking and reverse?

we were just talking of this earlier, certain c6 flexplates push the converter into the pump and murder them.

when you bolted up the trans did it have at least 1/8-3/16 inch play on the converter? you should be able to bang it back and forth from the flex plate to the pump. if less then an 1/8 or no play its probably already too late.

unless you janked the governor up or something.

The TV pressure is adjusted to the correct setting. I must have checked it 50 times. I've tried shifting it manually and still no go. I have reverse works fine. The torque converter is seated properly, I checked that many times as well. I am thinking stuck governor maybe. I'll probably just end up taking it to the shop. Thanks

my t bird dose that. hold it to floor thin it shifts out of first gear.thin its good the rest of day. next day same crap
