I currently own a 98 Ford Ranger that I am SAS'ing and a 1997 Explorer 5.0L AWD:headbang:. Next year I want to do a heart transplant from the explorer to my ranger. Has anyone done this before? Should i try and turn the 97 engine into a 98? I have to hole explorer to use or just swap what I need? The question is what do I need to make it all work and pass NYS Inspection.:icon_confused:

My builds should answer your questions. My ranger for wiring, my sport Trac for the mechanical part of the swap...

I did the exact same swap basically, just follow the thread in the info section and you'll be fine. Anything specific you need I'm sure SVT has done it or knows how to do it. Not sure on inspection laws though I'm in PA. You may need an engine the same year or newer. I'd look into that first.

I did the 97 Swap into my 88 myself. SVT answered some questions for me on that too. Take a look at my swap...might give you some ideas.

I ran into this with my sport Trac swap. After some research, the EPA police does not have a way to tell if the ecu is a 97 or 01, so you can use the 97 motor and harness, and just say its a 98. The only difference between the 97 and 98 is pats, which is not in any of the engine wiring. You can run the 97 ecu and just say its a 98. Law states (for those states that enforce, like cali law) that an engine swap must be the same year or newer and retain all emissions devices, sensors, etc that came on the motor you are installing. Going with an older motor won't fly (the exception to those states that don't have emissions testing/enforcement), but since they can't tell what year an ecu is, not even hooking up to the data link will they get the info. Only the dealer has the capabilities to pull the year from an ecu. I got this info from a trusted source thats a certified tuner in an area thats on the border or an emissions compliant area, so he knows about what the emissions guys can and can't do...

Thanks for all the input guys^^. I thought about just swapping in the dash out of my explorer and would have no issues with wiring, engine or cab. Interior color is the same as my truck so it will work out.

If your gonna do it that way, pull the entire chassis harness out of the donor, and install it into your rig, this way you the entire harness, and will not have any doubts on the wiring.
