Where do you get your carbon? Welding rods? Take apart pencils?
I used to have a bunch of carbon rods in a pile of welding rod. Not sure if I still have those squirreled away.

Ebay. Half inch thick carbon plates are apparently common in glass and solar panel manufacturing. Get them as thick as you possibly can, 1 in is not unreasonable. Also get the biggest plate that you can. Mine has six bolted the whole way around the barrel. Electrolysis works by line of sight, and the plates do degrade over time, so you want as much starter material as you can possibly get in there to avoid having to change plates too often.

You get some sludge that settles out on the bottom, but the water just stays murky black. I have a bung (lol) on it that let's me hook up a garden hose and drain it. Tbh I never change the water unless I have to work on a plate, then I just drain, scoop gunk, refill, and add sodium carbonate. You can get sodium carbonate in bulk from ebay/Amazon. I bought a 5 gallon bucket a while ago. Still have a lot of it.

For the most part, paint and scale stays on the part like a loose plastic bag. I just pressure wash it and go to town with media blasting when it dries. Nice part about using sodium carbonate and super high amperage is it typically dissolves light oils and some grease while in the bath. Annihilates anti seize as well.

Eastwood dual voltage gun. Its ok. Good for the money. I used to have the super old school craftsman gun and loved it.

The eastwood gun is ok. There's times I prefer the craftsman bombshell.

Eastwood gun is great if your part is hanging vertically. It's a cone diffusion, but is super sensitive to air pressure spikes when my compressor kicks on. It sucks when your part is hanging flat. Usually pre heating your parts mitigates this tho.

The craftsman gun is a stones throw away from greatness. Jet diffusion, and self contained, no compressor needed. Only drawback of it is not enough amps of power to get the powder to stick to the part. Pre heating completely mitigates all drawbacks tho. It does suck for horizontal surfaces and leads to clumping. Also total ass for metallic flake powders. The low amps leads to glitter clumps in the part.

No matter what you do, go hammer a grounding rod in outside and run your part grounding to it along with the gun ground. The extra grounding for the part being coated is critical.
