Yea i think he did the whole set. They may be gone now... He just grooved them as a trade for a set of 6 bolt rims 12" wide to put the 38"s on and lookong at it better the truck will come up about 2-3" once i actually get the tires on.

yay! pics. i finally got my rear gears in... took marlin 4 days to get me everything for the front. took trail gear like a week and a half to get the rear stuff.
rear ring and pinion
reargears529.jpg

not as fancy packagaing as marlin either... kinda dry whereas marlins stuff is covered in oil to stop rust

and all together :) now i just need to get the diffs setup

i do have one problem.... how do i break these in? they say to run it on jackstands for 30 mins and then change the gear oil blah blah. then run for 500 miles before beating on them to avoid damageing them by overheating and messing up the heat treatment. but this truck isnt street legal at all.. and my driveways not that long

ya... except if i stand on the deck i can see 3 different cops houses... lol they dont give a shit anyways but the problem is that latley we have had a bunch of citiots move in around here. and they call the cops for EVERYTHING i used to drive field trucks and dirtbikes to get to buddys houses. to some that were 30 mins away. and i stuck to trails for the most part and no one said anything.

scince the citiots moved in (and theyre everywhere) ppl are getting the cops called for going from thier house to trails on atvs...

i do have a tow bar though.... maybe lock in the hubs and leave the driveshafts out and pull it around for 500 miles? lol

well im bored.. so i took more pics. im going to try and get to the shop tommorow. i meant to today and yesterday but chores and such kept me from getting there.
heres the difference between the toyota 8" rear ring gear and the landcruiser 9.5" ring gear

I know you were probly just joking but this method won't do what your after, you'll need to drive the gears to heat them up to break them in, coasting I don't think would heat them up properly and not to mention coasting would be pressure on the coast side of the gear not the drive side..

Best bet is to trailer it to an FSR or long smooth dirt road somewhere. You don't have to do all 500miles (800kms) in 1 go, you just need to take it easy for the first 500miles (800kms), that's why I suggest a dirt road and not a trail, lol, unless your really good at taking it easy..... OR if you know someone that's trust worthy with a Toy that can use the 2 totally different drop outs for a couple weeks of road use. I know you have LC and p/u drop outs so this may be difficult. Or if your careful you can go wheeling to break them in just take it easy, like do only 31" tire trails, lol, in 4wd so both diffs are being broke in at the same rate.

When I set up my buddies v6 8" 5.29's for his not road legal Toy p/u wheeler, we installed each in the rear diff of his wife's 93runner to break em in, he drove it to and from work for a couple months to get enough miles on them. The 5 sp and 31's sucked ass he said tho with the 5.29, felt like a power house even taking it easy but reved out before hitting highway speeds, lol. Almost like he was in low range he said, haha. Nice part was we were still building his rig at that point so it wasn't like the drop outs needed to be installed in it yet anyways.

When we did my Zooky buddies set, he bought spools for both drop outs so we went for several long drives down a close by forest service road (FSR) in rear wheel drive and then once it was broke in we swapped drop outs front to rear and repeat, took a few weekends and a lot of beer, er I mean fuel but it worked out. lol.

This is something I'll need to consider as well, since my Rover isn't street legal either, once I install the brand new 5.29's I'll need to do break in somehow too. More than likely I'll just take it wheeling and take it real easy for the first month or 2, no foot to the floor stuff or bouncing and spinning, the rest should be not much different than on road driving really.

Are you going to be setting them up yourself?

No probally wont set them up myself. One i dont know hoe and i dont want to learn on 5.29s all ive heard id if they arnt perfect they'll get screwed.

And ill probally just try a mix of dirt roads and light trails. Which should be interesting because i live in a half assed populated area and like i said people are gettin touchy or somthing with not legal trucks. But i should be ok i have a certain amount of trails i can do and my buddy with that mazdas house backs onto a field.

Just gonna suck i dont want to spend 2 months breaking in the gears thats like half my wheeling season

Hell, with 38's on the Zook, man, you be able to wheel all winter long now. I do all winter with 38's on a way heavier rig than yours and it floats real well on the 5-6 feet deep snow we get here, they should do great under your rig.

If you're worried about taking forever to break em in, head out down a real long forest service road and make the time and mileage to break em in sooner. In all reality you should be able to put a good 400kms on a day if you put your mind to it. At 100kms an hour (if you can go that fast lol) should take you 8 hours to complete break in mileage, right? Could do that in a weekend or 2 I would think. Just think of the furthest fishin lake you have that has a long gravel road to it, then park the truck and trailer at the pavement end and get them 5.29's broke in, might want to bring a bunch of extra fuel tho, lol. Actually if you have the money, you could get the GF or a buddy to follow you in the truck and trailer in case anything goes wrong during the break in drive.

Might sound costly, but imagine breaking a ring gear way out in the bush and having to drag it all the way out, then spending to buy another gear set and pay to get it installed.

That would be a great way to work any potential bugs out while your at it, bring tools and parts tho, haha.

Even make it into a fishin-camping trip, if you already have a few people tagging along anyways, make a weekend out of it. Kill to birds with 1 stone so to speak. :D

That all sounds great but we dont have things like that here 95% of the reforestrations are gated the only one that isnt is like 4 minutes from my house and take 3 mins to drive through lol. anywhere to get a decent day in or go fishing is like 2.5 hrs away.... And then its serious trails again..

Although a guy that knows a guy i go wheeling with has a farm that he's converted to a
half ass ohv park. And id definetly like to be able to do winter wheeling i tried to this winter but ended up fixing the truck all winter instead then had one trip out and now am rebuildin the whole damn thing again :annoyed:

alright well... i got distracted today. i was looking at escorts build and he converted his a/c to OBA and it looked so easy... and my truck doesnt have ac. BUT! i do have an old a/c compressor from my ranger that fits (kinda) on my f150 and an old 3 gallon air comressor from crappy tire. soo.... im putting oba in my f150 lol

its nice starting with a compressor like this because it alreasy has everything you need like gauges, the switch (if you have a/c already you can wire it to the a/c switch in the dash) the tank, connectors and the pressure switch

heres almost everything together. forgot to add in the relay.
onboardairsetup.jpg

heres 1 gauge that will be going in my dash (there was 2 with my compressor so i picked the bigger one)
dashgauge.jpg

stole the switch from the compressor too. again if you have a/c stock you can wire it to come on with that switch
reusingswitch.jpg

and i dunno what to call this part... it goes between the pump and tank.. im using it to hold the blow off valve and the pressure switch
rearrrangedstuff.jpg

i just rearranged a few things. where the pressure switch is now is where the big pressure gauge used to be. and then i took off the one quick connect and added a fitting so i can run a hose off to the back of the tank. and added another fitting so i can run a hose to the front of the truck as well.

Nice, that's the idea!!

I tried using the stock a/c pump from the Explorer and fried 2 of them trying to make it my OBA system. They over heated and died with in minutes of turning them on. They were very used, like 300+kms on each vehicle they came off of so maybe that's why they died. I added an in-line oiler at the beginning and they still over heated and failed. Now I'm ion the process of swapping in a York compressor, just need to hit up the hardware store to get some fitting to adapt it to my system and she'll be operational. I miss having OBA.

I have a factory GM ACDelco A/C compressor on the Rover for OBA, it has worked great for several years, aside from airing up the tires with it, I used it to air up my dingy and water floaties every time we hit the river along the way on a couple trails we have here. Great way to cool off on a hot day of wheeling, stop for lunch break and air up some water toys and hang out and play in the water for a while.

I was surprised how well the a/c pumps can run air tools too, like without a reserve tank I can blast off all the lug nuts without issue. Great upgrade for any rig imo.

yea i wish i had the space for it in the samurai.. but i barly have room as it is theres no way i can fit an a/c copmpressor in there. so OBA in the tow rig will have to do. and i dunno if i wanna try and make the ranger pump i have now work (only the 2 front bolts line up with the f150 mount) or if i wanna go to the jy and get an a/c pump off an f150 or what are those york ones off?

alright well heres where im placing the tank. i rearranged a few more things.. added another output so i can have a quick connect up front and out back. and painted the tank black so its not so noticeable.
heres where the tanks going. if it turns out not to be ebough ill add another 3 gallon tank on the frame rail somewhere

and here it is with the hood closed

Well when I was last at the local wreckers I saw quite a few in the old 80's Volvo's with a/c, international used them as well, I have also seen them on the odd big truck for a/c. Kilbey enterprises sells them new and reconditioned as well. Just walk around the wreckers and see whats what, you may get lucky.

Not sure what else they would be on tho.

Cool place to hide the tank tho, did you actually mount it in there or is it just wedged in place?

You could always make a plate that bolts to both the compressor and the engine mount so your using all 4 bolts on both pieces. I wouldn't trust just 2 myself, it likely would allow some vibration that will end up leading to a case or bracket failure down the road.

A single piece of 1/4" plate would probly work, mark and drill all 4 engine bracket holes then drill out the 2 other compressor holes, then you can bolt the bracket to the engine with the 2 compressor bolts and 2 short bolts, then tap and thread the last 2 compressor holes, bolt her in, put the belt on and done. Depending on how close together the 2 4 bolt patterns are to each other of coarse.

Naw the bracket actually only has 3 holes on the motor and 2 line up perfect bu the back one is like 1/4" off so its too close to add another hole but not close enough to use the stock hole....

Sucks but oh well ill figure somthing out. And no the tank isnt mounted yet i was just screwing around with where i wanted it.
