1988 samurai LWB build

which tire to go to after new axles

well no pics today spent the day cutting grass. half ass looking for a job and threw a manual choke on my buddies mazda.

i while i was at the shop i grabbed my 3rds and packed them up they are going out to get setup with the 5.29s tommorow :icon_thumby:

should be back early next week which kinda sucks because i was hoping to get the axles together this weekend. i was shooting to be together for the mudbog dad sponsors for the 25th. but thats 9 days away now.... so i doubt that'll happen so we'll run my buddys mazda in its place.

im kinda stuck right now. i need $ lol

im waiting on my diffs to return for me to be able to rebuild the axles. i need to get a tcase and the 4wd transmission in that way i can set my rear pinion angle and measure for driveshafts. then it'll be on tires and i can flex it out to measure for front shocks and do my fender trimming

after that i just have to set up my steering then i think it will be ready for a trail. not completly finished but driveble for sure.

:D

posted my 33s up for sale... i dont really want to sell them but then agian i dont have a use for them either.

hopfully get my diffs back today, i may have just sold the tires too lol so ill take that $ and get my new master cylinder and steering box

ok so im looking at the power steering boxes. and i have 2 options an both toyota IFS power steering boxes.

one is from a 86-88 and the other is 89-95. but for the life of me i cannot find the difference between to 2. anyone know the difference?

chances are ill end up with the newer box as im trying to get one from a wrecker and i doubt they will still have an 86 toyota sitting in the yard

From what I can remember the newer box is the ticket, something about better design in flow and power assist circ.

okay so i sold those 33s and went out and got myself a power steering box out of a 93 4 runner got that all mocked up and evrything threw a knuckle on the check my placement and it seems that its going to be perfect where its sitting

toyota on top obviously and it is bacwards to the samurai on because one is on the inside of the framerail and ones on the outside.
unfortunatly its was a 1 step forwards 1 step back day... i went to throw in my steering linkages to see what all needs to be done with that and my crossover from knuckle to knuckle hits my leaf spring.... so looks like im gonna be needing a highsteer kit

and like what was said b4 i also need a different pitman arm thanks to toyotas wierd ass stock version. i was hoping to have the break in and shake down run next weekend but now with having to spend the $ on this stuff i doubt it'll happen.

good news though with the new box outside the frame it looks like all the stock landcruiser stuff is the proper length but i will need to switch out to a fj80 TRE at the pitman arm because the replacement one is tapered for that. (im still looking to see if its a different taper then a fj62 TRE)

not too many pics because inside the fender well was too dark for my crappy camera. but all in all it really wasnt too hard to get the box to fit. a littel inner fender trimming and i was even able to reuse one of the holes from the samurai box to locate the toyota one. i will try and get better pics tommrow hopfully, after the mud bog im hoping to be able to get back and throw my diffs in and rebuild the knuckles and get those on then the front end is all buttoned up minus the steering

oh and i also grabbed a power steering pump and front driveshaft today with a cv joint in it. and hopfully will be picking my t case up next week

EDIT: i went and read the FAQ at pirate and it seems the taper for the TRE on a FJ62 vs FJ80 are the same so yaayyy i dont need to spend that $ so its looking like another $266 plus shipping and this thing "should" be finished... not counting extra crap like new wheel cylinders out back and a spring kit. oh yea i almost forgot i also need a master cylinder off a suburu legacy i think 1999/2000 due to the new big breaks up front i dont think the stock samurai one will flow enough

the pit before the 1st class. they had 2 hydro-vac trucks there to ad water and added dirt with a few tractors for every class.
DSC00994.jpg

and while setting up
DSC00990.jpg

carnage for the day was 2 front driveshafts in two different trucks one was a 69 f100 on 44s and the other way an s10 buggy on tractor tires around 38" tall. (no pics)

one rear driveshaft under an 2006 ish chevy sas'd and all that on 44s also bent the link bars in the rear end and all that pinion pointed straight up lol (no pics of this truck)

transfercase housing cracked in mikes big ford its an 06 truck but has a 7.3 in it turbo work done, range box, chipped and generally badass on 57" tractor tires. rolled last fall
DSC01024.jpg

one guy in a custom toyota came outta the pit hot and hit the wall blew a bead and bent a rim. a BFH and quick start fixed that up (no good pics)
DSC01021.jpg

and once again another custom truck all tube chassis huge motor etc (green 32 ford lookin thing) hit the wall and blew the chain drive for his front axle.

panhard par went boom. its a super clean break though... almost like that tube has been welded there b4 but its a brand new thing that he got custom made from some low rider shop

well its probably because it was from a lowrider shop.....lol

yup lol but he figured a panhard bar is a panhard bar. and they make "custom" lengths now we know that they cut and spile in the middle instead of doing it the right way..

HOWEVER! on my project i made some good headway today. of course no pics but i threw my 3rd member in the front and one knuckle completly stripped cleaned re-sealed and al new bearings in and the knuckle back on the truck :D

just need to throw my caliper on and a hub then im on the other side. hopfully ill have the front siting on its own weight again by tommorow. then i just have to pull little parts off to change to better parts liek swaping my upper king pins for my highsteer arms. and i have to order and put on my rock assault knuckle felt protectors.

its gonna be awsome my wheel mounting serface is outside of my fander flares! which are being removed :)

ok SO! todays progress. once i got there i tourqued my wheelbearings and everything on the drivers side and then threw my the rest of my hub together that side is now done.
knuckleson.jpg

the plan was to have a step by step thing on how to assmeble these knuckles with pictures but my camera girl fell asleep. lol so lets just say its not all to hard and you end up with this
passengerdone.jpg

alltogether2.jpg

while i was on that side i realized i hadnt tightened my leaf spring bolts yet so i did that quickley
tighteningleafspring.jpg

i pulled the whole knuckle off the truck by taking the lockout cap off and removing the circle clip at the end of the shaft then removing the king pin caps. doing it this way lets you take the whole knuckle assembly to a table to break it apart (also a nice fast way to change a broken shft on the trail)

once its on the table i take everything off and line it up along the table in the order and orientation that it came off. if it faced in that side of the part etc faces downwards to the table.

then clean it up in your fancy dancy parts cleaner
partswasher.jpg

repack everything with new grease. ( i went all out and got the fancy crap) lol actually it was cheaper then the crappy tire brand
bucketogrease.jpg

and re assemble until the truck looks like this
knuckleson.jpg

then........

withtires.jpg

all i have to say is :thefinger: this thing gonna be a tank
