the motor in my truck is about to go so im just going to swap in a reman short block, im figuring while im at it im going to cam it port the cylender heads and upper and lower intake to match have the heads shaved about 30 thou swap in bigger injectors maf and cai and see about a custom tune for the ecu im willing to spend about 2-3000 on the motor because the body and interior are pristine and thats less than it would cost to replace the tuck with a newer lower milage ranger, that and im kind of attached to my little truck. what kind of gains could i expect from doing this

4.0 5 speed reg cab short bed 2wd

The stock 4.0l OHV claims 160HP
With more air(cam) and add-ons to use the extra air you could get up to 200-210HP area

Don't think raising compression(shaving heads) will add much, just cost you more in fuel since regular gas would ping, so you would have to use a higher octane, which does not have more power just a higher cost.

Stock Ford air intake is as good as any after market CIA, just FYI, tests have been done, no improvement, but they can sound better.

Add an electric cooling fan on the rad and remove belt driven fan and fan clutch, this frees up extra HP as well

4.0l ohv's are awesome! You could tow almost any small to medium trailer. I haul small bales of hay every now and than and it tows great! They create great power and one of the best engines ford has created for the ranger! You take real good care of them and they'll take care of you. It may have a rough body, but the motor runs like a champ!

Matching the ports on any engine build is always a good idea. Some of the other bolt-ons you listed are just a waste of money. Bigger injectors maf and cai are not going to yield you much at all for the money you spend on them. I would put a good exhaust system on it though. Yet not to big of one. Gear it for max power and run it. The 4.0 will never be a Hot Rod but it can be a good powerful setup. I like to build for torque myself. And I am always surprised how well they run.
