You can used compressed air to hold the valves closed, you get an adapter that screws into spark plug hole to inject the air.
Make sure cylinder is at TDC just in case, if you push to hard on the valve, air seal will break and valve will drop.
I used rope, move cylinder's piston about 1/2 way down the cylinder then feed in a few feet of rope, rotate crank until rope presses against valves to hold them in place, I also put pressure on the wrench holding the crank, so piston won't move down with valve pressure as I remove spring.
This takes longer but I like it better.
