A buddy of mine has 2 1990 bronco ii a4ld trannies, and his 1993 explorer just dropped a Trans.

I know the ex uses a different a4ld, with an additional solenoid or two.

So it stands to reason that an older ECM lacks the controls for these an additional solenoids, so it won't work.

But in his case, if the trans runs without these inputs, it'll shift fine because the trans, and ECM-neither know otherwise

I'm by no stretch of the imagination an auto tranny guy.

I know the bells share a bolt pattern, any other deal breakers?

My credo
If you can’t fix it with a hammer, you have an electrical problem
As long as both are the same engine size the electronics are the same 2 solenoid version. The only thing I can think might be different is the orientation of the shift lever and kick down lever. One is pointed up and the other down. I believe this is the case. You have to have the ECM to get 4th gear and lock-up out of both transmissions. Let us know how things work out.

I know there was a difference, and I think it was based on year, rather than engine. I don't know what year the change started.

However since the older ones had a hydraulic 3-4 shift you will have all your gears. You should even be able to retain converter lock up, as long as the plug fits. You will just have a check engine light.

Which code will toss the cel?

I imagine this in theory is no different than swapping a 4.0 into an auto bronco ii, without swapping the trans too, so I'd imagine someone has already encountered this
