Yes, its pretty much been a long downhill slide(pun intended) into the abyss of technology when the first automatic transmission was put into a 4WD

Now I actually think automatics can be better off-road, but its the idea of it that started the slide, next we had power steering, power brakes, and the slide continued

That being said I will be the first in line for AI(artificial intelligence) off-road self drive, can't beat a computer in picking the right path thru an obstacle or hazard, you may think you can, but you can't, well once its been done, lol

I have not seen that. Especially in sand.

In sand is where the older ones do better, traction control on the new ones kills your momentum and gets you stuck, also the low profile tires on most new vehicles do terrible in the sand when aired down, plus they are heavier, which makes it even worse.

What is the point then? That would completly defeate the purpose of going offroad if a machine does it all for you.

I would think mud would be a similar situation.

Athough ive noticed with my jeep it basically shuts off the trac control/stability when in mud or sand mode. I played with it in the snow in those to modes and i could get it pretty damn sideways with about as much wheel slippage as i wanted.

Yeah the 99-04's are the most sought after GC's for offroad rigs from what ive read on the jeep forums.

No they aren't, those are the last of the good straight axle non Wrangler Jeeps but certainly weren't the best. The 91-99 Jeep XJ was the best platform.

From what ive read its 6.2" front and 8.4" rear....so... less then youre average 2wd I beam ranger
