Intrested in doing a gear swap on my stock rear end. First of all, I am turning 31x10.5s with I believe the stock 3.73s....I would like a little more grunt to get up hills, so I was thinking of bumping it up to 4.30s. Would this be a good idea or not? Also, I want to get aways from the 1 wheel peel... what should I look at?

Right now I am open for all ideas. Truck has about 170,000 miles on it, and I want to keep it going strong....Has a newer motor (45xxx miles) and a new clutch....

easiest and cheapest way for you to do it is to find a 4.10 rear axle with a limited slip from the bone yard and repack the clutches. Otherwise youre looking at throwing A WHOLE LOT of money at it.

What vehicles would have the 4.10 stock that are the same width/suspension setup as the truck?

Other rangers... you just have to look... And it might be over kill but you could always get an exploder rear end too cause alot of them came with L/S but the gears is a hit or miss and you have to do a SOA swap on the braketery I'm hopefully picking up an explorer 8.8" with 3.73's and trac lock.

Well there is a 4wd Bronc with a 2.9 sitting in the strip lot on post, there is also a exploder (dunno what year) and a Ford Aerostar (also dunno what year)

Oh yeah an aerostar should work too. Just as long as it has the 7.5" or 8.8" rear end and either Ford Ranger, BII, Explorer, Aerostar, Mustangs? (not sure if they will have the gearing you want though... and most likely a SOA.). Those are the only things I can think of with the right axle.

Oh and the axle tag you are looking for should say something like: 4L10 or 4 10 or 3L73

I'd go 4.56. The little 4-banger does real well with 4.56 & 31s.
what top speed would a 4 cyl achieve with 31"s and 4.56 gears?
i know it wont cruise at 2k rpm while doing 40, but im curious how top speed is affected by lower gears

Theoretically, assuming it had enough power, over 130MPH...

What does the top speed matter for?...if you dont have enough gear and torque to accelerate to that speed why worry about it.

Well, the whole idea was to be able to climb some of the hills here in Germany, plus I want to be able to up the tire size in the future.

i was asking about top speed cuz right now with 3.73 and 30s i can get 90mph, i want to get 31s and 4.56 in the future, so i was wondering if it would still keep up at 90.

i dont want to put the 31 yet because i know it will deff kill the 2.5...even more

Get some 4.56's and install yourself, 200 bucks roughly. Get a Powertrax No slip, 480 bucks, install yourself.
