Pretty much a honda civic with snow tires will pass you in 2wd.

Even with an open diff, decent tires and weight in the bed will do fine in most situations (as I can attest). However I'm sure with a decent locker or LS would cover the rest of the gap quite nicely.

In 35+ years of driving I've only needed 4x4 once.

It's like trying to ice skate with roller blades.

Not when you flip the truck, well.... ok it was fun not for the s-10 though, LOL

a 2wd ranger will get you to where you need and back home with weight in the bed (200-300lbs) and at the time I had almost bald Wild Country radial RVT's on the back of mine and made it 20 miles in a blizzard (first time for us in iowa) I did get stuck once but thats because I wandered off of where the road was and broke through the ice setting the truck on its frame. other then that it did great.

2WD in Heavy Snow Handles Awful... You Would Need to Put Some Weight in the Back and Have Good Snow Tires... And Stay Away From Hills! My 2WD Ranger Has a Hell of a Time Going Up Snowy Inclines of about 70 - 90 Degrees, Even With Weight and Tires... I Would Suggest a 4 x 4...

Im pretty sure anything would have trouble goimg up a 70-90 degree incline, snow or not!

I drove 2wd rangers in snow for 5 years, its not bad on the road, you just have to be careful and know what youre doing. I ditched my excab once the first winter i drove, and never again. Stopping is way easier in a ranger than anything else ive driven, but thats probably because theyre a pretty light truck.

Make sure it has l/s or a locker , nobby tires, and weight in the bed and you should do fine.

The weather by me was mild this season for winter. the ground hasn't froze yet. my dad learn a valuable lesson of 4 wheel drive vs. 2wd.
lawn mover that had to get service, lawn mover would not start, my dad back it down the grass driveway with ruts from 2 months. about 3inches and when my dad started to pull the mover he maybe made it 50ft and then start is sink and came to compete stop.
I should have told dad to put it in 4x4. - if you are sinking under your own weight you probably pull it form a distance and
changing from 4x4 Lo/ 4x4 you have to hit the brake when changing back. my dad did not know that.

As long as you can turn your wheels the opposite way than your tail is goin, and keep it in one lane, you're golden. I do it every day. My 2wd handles just fine in the snow and ice, except getting going again at stop lights. Even in the storms and 2 feet of fresh snow on the ground I had lots of fun drifting. lol In fact, right after the last snow storm, I took a video. I'll upload it to youtube and post it for ya.

Me and my old man take our 2wd F150 out every time it snows and have competitions. We take turns driving and try to climb the steepest hills we can find. The fun ones are the ones you have to get a run at, can get interesting when you slide back down backwards. No snow yet this year for us. It's too bad, I found a couple snow tires for the back of my Ranger and really want to see what it will do.
