Recently boought my first ranger which is also my first prerunner!!:giggle: However, last week the tranny stopped going forward, drove about a mile and a half home in reverse!:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: Now I have a delema, I scored a 97 beam 4x4 with some extra parts for a song, figured I'd just off the 97 and getr squared away, but its provingm to not sell as fast as hoped. Soo, I have a question,.....
will the trans out of the 97 work in my 94?? I realize I'll have to change the output shaft but what im wondering about is the electronics on the 97 trans, perticularely where the shifter hooks up, any info??
Typiclly I'd be scouring for the info before asking yall but I'm swamped at work, Im a mechanic, homebased and this was my daily seeing as my "useual" daily caught on fire at the very last few hrs of an engine swap/upgrad and simply dont have thime for that at thre moment.
hank You in advance
Hope to hear something soon

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
More info needed. What engine does each truck have?

Not all the bellhousing bolt patterns are the same.

My bad, 4.0! Can change bell housing. I only call myself a mechanic because of all the others that dont know jack that do!:geek:
Now to be honest, the only thing I see thats diefferent is that theres a electrical box on the side of the tranny.

Afaik.... Bellhousings are integral. 2.8, 2.9 and 4.0 share the same bellhousing. 3.0 is alone. 2.3 is alone

Yeah, parts interchangeability is Ford's Achilles heel.

I thought that was just the manual transmissions. Can't he switch bellhousings between some of the automatics?

So, the transmission that came I'm the 97 4x4, can i use that in my 94?? Remove transfer case put the output shaft from my old one on it and be good?? What's the module on the side of the transmission where the shift linkage is?? Do I need to have that plugged in?? I thought about taking the ECU transmission and then I have another engine that I want to drop in as well because I have a rod knock but I don't want 4x4. But I do want OBD2 for tuning.

You will want to use a 94 valvebody.

That it is, DAMN!! I also heard they are a pain in the ass to rebuild. I've been inside one expect in this one too change the filter.I remember my dad rebuilding one, 1 time and 1 time only. Lol Took him about a week if afternoons, lots of colorful language and flying tools. He never did it again!! And everything is so expensive in Cali. 😞

Maybe Piggy back the controller.

I plan on trying it with the ecoboost as proof of concept. I used to do it with the e4od and 4r70w....to use them with carbs. But not the best setup.

The 4r55 is not the same as those but
I will try it anyway. Hopefully before the end of the year.

Except I prefer 4x4
