What replacement bolts can I use to hook up my exhaust maifolds to the "Y" pipe? I was told everything from "spring bolts" to a plain "nut and bolt".
The guy doing my engine said all that was on the manifold was a nut and bolt but several web sites don't jive with this?
We put new head on the 2.9 and he had to cut the bolts of the old head etc.

If I had my manifolds off and/or good access to the Y-pipe flange, there is only one way I would go . . .

Drill out the rusted studs. Use a minimum 1/4"or larger (5/16", 3/8") diameter drill bit.
Use the largest possible diameter hardware store stainless steel nuts and bolts with SS lockwashers, and LOTS OF ANTI-SEIZE THREAD COMPOUND (moly type).

You will probably never again have an issue with removing and replacing Y-pipe hardware.

You might also want to check out the thread "Y-pipe to Manifold Flange Fix" in the Exhaust section here, and this website >> www.the-hush.com

P.S. And move this thread to the Exhaust section?

Is this not part of a 2.9?

How do you move this thread to exhaust?

The factory bolts to hold the Y-pipe to the exhaust manifolds
on ALL 2.9 engines as well as OHV 4.0's are the same.

they are a 12mm X 1.75 bolts

a Bolt 45mm long is about perfect.

the factory bolts were "Truncated root" self-locking bolts
If you get the old bolts (B-O-L-T-S, NOT studs)
out of the manifolds you can replace them with the bellhousing
bolts from a 3.0 engine.

the bolts are more than prone to rusting in place so I still don't
understand why ford was so obsessed with locking them in place...
