This question will have a 1000 answers no matter what. Personally I wouldn't use a 1 ton drivetrain with that large of a tire. If you were to choose so I would use a 14 bolt chevy rear and a Dana 60 front from a Ford that had king pins. That is about the largest you are going to find on a normal pick-up. I would suggest something larger, Rockwells, ZFs, IH portals and other I probably forgot. You will break the 1 ton stuff if you are making any kind of power. You can find a pair of 2.5 ton rockwells for the price of a front D60 in most places anymore. If you have the money and time you can make a rockwell not much heavier than a 14 bolt chevy. Anything with large tires and a deep ratio is going to put huge stress on the frame so a properly designed suspension and stregnthened frame is important. If you are using a large engine...i would personally build a new frame. If the thing is properly designed and the right materials are used you won't have any problems. Also a square tube driveshaft will never be stronger than a round tube. Reguardless of what you want to use there is a lot of planning you need to do to get the tire to fit, axle selection, materials to use and so on.

And just in case you missed my post in the 4wd suspension part of the forum, here's broken inner and outer cromo shafts along with a CTM u-joint. These are out of a 79 KP Ford 60 and he's only running 40" tires.

Things break....no matter what

Some people make d60's with 44+ tires work for a long time before breaking anything...
And some people can run upgraded rockwells onces with 44's and break axles and shafts and knuckles and R&P all in one day....

Just depends on your wheeling style. I tend to be the kind that can find a weak link in anything. Thats why i'm running 60's and only 39's.Well that and I cant afford bigger tires at the time.

Id say do 60's and 44's and be happy with what you have. 54's are to damn expensive anyways.

OR!!! Run 60's and 54" boggers and tell us how long it takes you to break things with lots of pictures and videos....
